contact them, ask for a refund or a replacemnt. This is the first time Im seeing a company use the same model number in more than one product. Im very sorry.

Click on the above it will take you directly to the homepage for your model printer just verify version of vista and run the application and follow on screen prompts and you should be good to go

I have seen this fault before on the 6550. It for some reason it thinks you are updating the firmware.
I suspect you have lost the firmware in the scnt board. You will need to download it from canon's site and follow the instructions to update the firmware. It may just work. If not then the scnt board is screwed and will need replacing.
