This problem bugged me for months! Selecting CONT. PRINTING as indicated by Small6363 allowed to print with the warning light on but did not solve the warning light problem. I eventually found a way to bypass the flashing light and warning message.
Underneath the cartridge, on the cylindrical portion, in the middle there is a small flat rectangle. This is the ink level detection spot. Cut a piece of aluminum foil of the same size and place it with a piece of scotch tape overt that flat rectangle. Voilà! No more flashing red light and no more out of toner message! Of course you have to monitor your level visually and change the cartridge when printing starts to fade.
Hope this helps!

SORRY! I tried posting but it did not seem to work and then I found out it has been posted multiple times! I don't know how to remove them...
Hi Patrick,
Is the "a small flat rectangle" on the printer, or on the cartridge?
I saw several small flat rectangles on the cartridge. I put aluminum foils. Then, the message changed from "Low toner" to "Out of toner". From I still can print, to can not print any more.
I must have not find right small flat rectangles. Help!
Tried this on my Canon MF4150 replacement cartridge. Worked like a charm. Your aluminum foil doesn't need to be precise--it just has to completely cover that rectangle.

Same here, on my MF4150D, the foil over the flat rectangle cut out, did not work. I placed a magnetic square (cut from a magnetic fridge decoration) and taped it over the rectangle...WORKED!

I MENT 4350 not 4150
I tries this with metal tape and scotch tape...neither worked. Any other suggestions?

Patrick's solution is spot on. I'm not sure why it works (I doubt the machine contains a strain gauge THAT sensitive), but it does. Three cheers for Patrick!
The "small rectangle" is on the toner cartridge, not the machine. Pull the cartridge out, turn it over, and look for an indentation 16 x 11 mm (about 5/8 x 7/16 inch near the center. Cut a piece of foil 15 x 10 mm, tape it on with ordinary cellophane tape (Scotch brand works well), and Bob's your uncle.
The foil trick did not work for my MF4370dn Canon printer. BUT a thin magnetic strip secured with tape placed in the small flat rectangle did! I cut-out a piece from the magnetic backing of a decorative item that was magnetically held to our refrigerator door. A magnetic business card or similar may also work. You can also find these strips/rolls in the crafts section in most stores. Pretty much any magnet should work so long as its thin enough.
I used small round magnet and tap it over the rectangle area. The problem solve! :D
Foil did not work (MF4150) small rectangle cut from a refrigerator magnet did work. Excellent! (Also updated the firmware - that didn't work!)
I have an Imageclass mf8180c and after putting a piece of foil over the clear window at the back of the cartridge the message changed from "change Y cart" to "print not guaranteed - check Y cart" and allowed me to print again. This will certainly carry me over until the new cart arrives!
Neither of the two solutions listed above work for me. I am using a compatible aftermarket toner cartridge which worked fine for a while and then suddenly I got this toner message despite the cartridge being nearly full still. The foil trick worked for a few days but not a permanent solution.
Did this with an aftermarket toner cartridge (104) for MF4370dn and it worked like a charm (the magnet taped solution). The "cutout" is just an indented squarish space on the bottom of the toner, a little smaller than a small postage stamp.
This is great - thanks so much! Worked for me on the 4350d. I didn't even try the foil, just cut a piece of a refrigerator magnet.
Just added the small magnetic strip to a Canon Cartridge 104 on a Canon MF4360-4390. Error light disappeared. Nice trick.
So far so good on MF4350d

How to reset the 'toner out' message in the Canon MF4350d laser printer?
I tried the metal tape and the scotch tape and neither worked...any other suggestions?
Hi! After multiple trying I've figured out, that sensor is magnetic sensitive. A small magnet placed there, at the base of the cartridge, in that rectangular window, will trick that low toner alert.
I have a Canon D1350 and taped the tiny aluminium over the chips and it worked perfectly! I use Canon's 120 cartridge. Thank you.
Works like a charm! Follow the directions above! Thank you...awesome!
Where is the window on Cannon 104 cartridge?
