WRT54GS V.4 w/ 1.06.3 if web password is on laptop will not conn.

I have Linksys WRT54GS. If I have password off it works fine with my Laptop with a wireless-b adapter card. If I turn on WEP 64 or 128 bite it will not work unless I turn it off then connect and then turn it back on.

It use to work fine with the old B router and with this newer g router with the same Laptop until I moved from Mass. to Florida Same IP Comcast.
I first tried resetting router upgraded to 1.06.3 from 1.06.1 fw.
Settings = Mixed SSID ********_**** Ch=6 Enable WEP 1 128 bits 26 hex dig password = 8 letters and 8 numbers no spaces Mac filter = dis.
Advanced settings are all defaults. Acces Restictions = dis.

Thanks for your help. I know i can turn off broadcast. I did not think about the Mac filter though. So I may do that until I ether get a new G card for my laptop or some how get this working again. To your question I am not messing with it. I used to Have Wep on in Mass but since getting to Florida and setting up my system I can not have it on and I see a lot of wires in this area.

I am not messing with it I had WEP working when I lived in Mass. with this Wireless G Router and the B laptop card. But since I moved to Florida It will not work with WEP enabled on the Router if I turn it off on the router and then connect the laptop with wep set on. and then Turn router web back on. It works fine until I reboot the laptop. If I leave wep off everything works fine. But I agree with you I want WEP on I have done as Miller and that will work and should be safe as long as I use Mac filters also. BUT I REALLY wont WEP back on until I get ether a new laptop or buy a G card so I can try WPA on this system.

Hi Miller thanks for the input, And I am not messing with it. I had WEP working with this router and my Sony laptop with the B card. before I moved. But now if I have WEP enabled on the router and on the laptop ( same as before same password same channel all same setting it dose not work. But if I turn WEP off at the router and ten connect with the laptop It works even if I turn WEP back on at the router until I reboot the laptop.

I have set broadcast off and used it that way I did not think of your idea of useing the Mac filter so I will do that for now, But I do want WEP or Wap on as it's the safest way.

I dont have an answer but a question and a suggestion. Why are you messing with it if it works?

I suggest set all at default and then if you are concerned about security, go into your setup and turn off "broadcast" so others cannot see your router.

If you need more ... go into each device, get the MAC address for each. Go back to router setup and allow only those MAC addresses that you have on your network.

Im not a pro ... I have never been a fan of router encription. There are simpler ways to get security in my view.

I hope this helps you

I would agree with miller in only one respect and that is that "if it ain't broke don't fix it"

As for security I disagree most strongly and would suggest that if you only have wireless B then consider an upgrade to at least wireless G and the security that can come with that.

No security is a sure way to attract undesirable use of your wireless with OR without SSID on.

At the very least try to get WEP up and running.

In some US states users can be liable for unauthorised use of their INTERNET afaik.

So lets say a hacker uses your wireless and its not secure and they get traced though you. Who do you think would get that loud knock on the door ?

Where is the wep key on the router

Attach a laptop or PC directly to the Router and open your web browser. Then type http://192.168.1.1 and you will be taken to a web page. The web information is usually under the security tab or under wireless. When you enable WEP it will ask you for a pass phrase, under that you will see three unique keys. Any of these will work as a WEP key.

The default username, password on the Linksys I think is Admin:admin if you have not changed it. You can also reset the router to get the default password back if you forgot it.

2nd laptop will not connect to internet

I'm assuming that your 2nd laptop is wireless? Does your router have encryption? If it has, then you need to get the encryption key from one of the working computers. Access the linksys interface from one of the working computers. Usually this is done by going to http://192.168.1.1 (leave username blank, password is "admin"). Go to Wireless> Wireless Security. Is encryption selected? If yes, get encryption key #1 and use it on the non-working laptop to connect to the router. If encryption is not enabled, go to the steps below.

On the 2nd laptop, click on the wireless icon at the bottom right part of your screen. Look for the linksys router from one of the available wireless networks, click connect and enter in the encryption key when it asks for it (not case-sensitive. Usually it's 10 or 24 digits). If encryption is not enabled, it will not ask for the encryption keys when you hit connect. See what happens.

Linksysfix.com/ela does not exist??

if you already have a wireless setup the latop (if it has wireless) will pick up the wireless router (if security on the wireless network, just type in the security password). Type 192.168.1.1 into your browser to access the routers configuration page.
