Question about Amana AFD2535DES French Door Refrigerator

1 Answer

Amana 8 yr old side-by-side refridgerator/freezer

Freezer no longer freezes. It's the same temperature as the refridgerator section though both are set for maximum cooling, door seals are fine, etc.
Could this be due to partial loss of refridgerant or otherwise mal-functioning compressor--or to something else?

Sound like you said a sealed system problem if compressor is running check the black coil under ref by the fan and see if it is warm if not you have lost freon just trash it then if it is see if fan in freezer is running if so pull back cover in freezer and see if coil starts to freeze if you have a ice block on coil then it is a defrost problem good luck

Whirlpool S20b American style f/f. The fridge is very cold and some foods are freezing.

Suggest lowering the refrigerator set point to a lower number such as 3. There is usually an indication of normal setting on the adjustments. Wait 24 hours and check the refrigerator compartment again. Use a thermometer to record the temperatures. The meat compartment will be normal just below freezing. If no success then read the following.

One reason that this occurs is that the unit is working near continuously to reach the freezer temperature. Another words the unit is not capable or cooling the freezer to the prescribed temperature. The result is the excess cooling eventually reaches the refrigerator section causing the refrigerator to freeze. The unit will if this is the case run nearly continuously. This situation is counter intuitive. Freezer not reaching set point, excessive cooling over cools refrigerator therefore refrigerator freezes.

The cause is either the freezer door/seal is not closing or sealing the freezer compartment or the compressor or defrost cycle is not functioning properly.

Check the freezer door seal using a strip of paper. Check to see if air is flowing from the vents in the freezer. Using a thermometer check the temperature of the freezer. Listen for and record if the compressor is running or not.

The normal freezer temperature is around '0' Fahrenheit. If no or little air is flowing from freezer air vents look for ice on the back wall. If ice is present it is likely the auto defrost cycle is not working. Attempt to defrost by hand which requires several hours with everything removed.

Check that lint and dust has not blocked the coils under the unit and that the lower fan is running. Usually warm air exits from the machine grill in the front. Remove the grill and check for air flow and debris buildup. Vacuum if necessary.

And unfortunately if the compressor runs continuously and no air blockage underneath would indicate that the cooling capacity is reduced requiring a major service or replacement.

Hope this helps?

My food in the fridge section is freezing in my Frigidaire fqe6307sae. How do I know if it is the thermostat and how do I adjust the temperature on the display?

I could check the freezer for ice build up. clean the door seals and make sure the freezer isn't overloaded. Too much food or improper sealing of the doors will make the compressor work harder in cooling down the freezer which in turn freezes the fridge part.

good luck

My 18 year old refrigerator GE model TFX24FG freezer side is not keeping food frozen. Refrigerator side seems to be working normally.

The refrigerator side is at present working properly , but slowly slowly, it will also loose its cooling. This will happen because, freezer side is the side which cools first, then the refrigerator side ( also called as fridge side)., gets cooled. If freezer side is not cooling / freezing properly then fridge side will also loose its cooling ability.------------ And later on both section will loose its cooling.----------- As per the present situation, it indicates problem with compressor or problem with freezer side door not closing properly.---------- Or the temperature in freezer section is not set to proper cooling/ freezing.--------- So first inspect temperature, is it set right? If ok, then check the freezer door , is it properly closed? If ok, then its compressor problem.? The compressor is running non stop, this is indication of compressor problem.---------- Click this link below for more help:--- ----------- Later on both section will loose its cooling. -------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Seems to be constantly running. refridgerator section too cold, with items freezing.

it could be 1 of 3 things,1st: the ptc overload on the compressor has welded together and cant cycle on and off/2nd:the cold control is defective, this component is the part you set the units temperature with/3rd:your damper vent door located between the freezer and refrigerator compartments could have frozen open from condensation and cant close to keep the cold out of the refrigerator after the refrige is cool enough, this is behind a plastic grille in the refrigerator and brings in cool air from the freezer

Refrigator not cooling properly, freezer works fine

I'll assume you don't have much food/items in the freezer section. Because you have the fridge set on the max cooling setting and the freezer set higher than the mid setting, it could be that you have frozen the cold air passage from the freezer to the fridge.

If you can, 1) remove all contents that would spoil; 2) turn off the fridge 3) open both doors and allow the fridge to manually thaw out completely (this will speed up the opening of the cold air exchange passage between the freezer and fridge, which is likely blocked and frozen solid. Have plenty of towels handy to soak up the water from the defrosting process,

After a FULL day of being left off and doors open to thaw out, check for any further thawing and dripping water inside, if present wait another 8 hours (you really want to get it thawed out the first time!) When that's done, reset BOTH temperature controls to the factory mid-point setting (5?) as marked on your control knobs.

The key to having a refridgerator run properly is to allow for it to run at the factory settings for at least 24 hours BEFORE you adjust the controls higher and/or lower for each section. Adjust it up or down in ONLY 1 setting increments so as to not cause ice build-up and freezing of the internal air exchange passages.

Also, as you've relegated this fridge as a garage "beer & backup" unit, make sure to keep the freezer as full as possible to make it run as efficiently as possible. You can freeze jugs of water and pack it with cheap thrift store bread to help it run correctly. An empty freezer has to work harder to keep just air at freezing temps. As such, it will pass much colder air into the fridge, and cause these types of freeze ups. By the way, turning up the temp controls only makes it worse and just results in a total "freeze up" inside the cabinet panels that you can't easily see or get at to rectify, hence the reason to shut it off and let it fully defrost.

When you're done, you should have your fridge back in action working like it should, but remember, don't rush temperature adjustments, even thou we all want those frosty beverages, it'll take a couple of days to achieve the desired "chill" you're likely used to getting when it was your primary fridge.

Hope this helps and Best Regards! Semper Fi!

Hi, Try these settings..
  1. Check the temperature setting

  3. Check for air flow restrictions in vents
  4. Test the temperature control
  5. Clean the condensor coils
  6. Check the door seals
  7. Test the door switch
  8. Test defrost heater
  9. Test defrost timer
  10. Test evaporator fan
  11. Check for a clogged drain tube
  12. Check for refrigerant leak                                      Pls rate my suggestion..thank you

Freezer not working - GSS20IGPA WW

All cooling starts in the freezer section where the evaporator is. Too much stuff in the freezer can inhibit the necessary airflow around the evaporator and cause it to freeze. Usually, the next defrost cycle will thaw it, but it can keep the cool from coming out. There are so many things that can cause the lack of cooling, but most often, it is NOT the compressor. e.g. - if there's water pooling on the inside at the bottom, you have a bad door seal. If no real cool ever happens and you don't hear the hum of the compressor often, you defrost timer is bad.

Help, no water but have ice out of door on amana side by side.

The freezer temperature dial is set too cold and it is causing the water to freeze in the tube right where it enters the freezer section. If you turn the temperature selector one or two numbers warmer for the freezer it will help.
You will also have to turn the box off and let the freezer thaw real good so that the line will thaw. Once this has been done, it should work fine.
