I have a netgear router but when i switch it on the internet light is always red and i cannot connect to the internet on my laptop

Try RESETTING your Netgear back to the default settings and configure it again.
To RESET the Netgear, power up the Netgear then press andhold the RESET button at the back of the router until all the LEDs flash. Connect a LAN cable from the Netgear to the LAN port on yourcomputer, open a browser and enter the Netgear configuration URL -
http://192.168.0.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = password You can now change the admin password and configure thewireless settings.
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2encryption.
Apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access, please click on thislink and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

I need the security key to my existing wireless netgear router.

The Security Key is normally used for Wireless routers to protect your connection from any unauthorized use. As you have said that you do not have the Security key for your router with you, the best way to connect your ACER laptop to the Netgear router is by asking your Wireless service provider to reset the security key & freshly reentering the same on both of your HP & ACER laptops.

RE: Acer 5610z and Netgear wireless router. The wireless switch is on. But I still do not find any wireless connections. Not even the Netgear Rangemax. Says there are no connections within range. No matter...

Your laptop may not be compatible with the n+ or you might have the security settings wrong try plugging your laptop directly in and try tweaking the setting there.

Trouble getting my router to go to wireless

A few things to look at:

1) On the front of the router, is the wireless LED lit up?
2) If it is not then it is either disabled or dead. Connect the router to your pc by cable and in a browser window enter 192.168.1.1.
3) At the login screen enter admin for the user and password for the password.
4) Once you are logged in, use the wizard to setup your wireless connection.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa

im pretty sure you will be fine if you bypass that step, or simply disconnect the modem from your router during that step.

Netgear usb adapter will not acquire ip address from router

Most laptops have a wireless card built in them and if you have one you should try using that instead and form past experiences USB adapters don't generally work on laptops in which case if you laptop has the slot for it you should buy a card like this http://www.netgear.com/Products/Adapters/SuperGWirelessAdapters/WG511T.aspx
