It should be around 900RPM. But you are not supposed to adjust it on the throttle body. The computer does this by manipulating the idle air control valve.

Run a vacuum test. Start motor and try to rev a little. If the vacuum drops it could be a plugged cat or muffler, some type of exhaust restriction. Vacuum should pull steady at 15 to17 inches at idle. This is just one possibility.

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The Engine and Automatic Transmission (not applicable to manual transmissions) in this vehicles drive train are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM and TCM (Power Train Control Module, Transmission Control Module). When a problem like this or other drive-ability related problems occurs the computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. Also always check fuel pressure for correct spec for your make and engine type. Also engine mechanical problems ca cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms

SOURCE: rough running when engine is cold

It can be issue with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.

SOURCE: How spark plug gap Chevy caprice 1989 V8 motor. Set idle up - too slow - stalling out.

Spark plug gap will usually not cause the engine to stall out. This vehicle should be fuel injected. The idle is controlled by the computer. How did you set it up? Have you scanned the computer for trouble codes to point you in the right direction? Check for vacuum leaks.

350 V8..revs itself and idles at higher rpm..tap excelerator and goes down to normal

if it is a carby engine then check the settings of the automatcic choke and the throttle cam screw settings
it works in a manner so that when you press on the accelerator the automatic choke flips a cam around and the idle speed screw rests on that cam giving a high idle speed until the engine is hot enough not to need a choke at which point the cam is held clear of the idle screw
if efi engine run the fault codes to check for problem accelerator position sensor or throttle position sensor.

COULD THE GAS PEDAL CABLE CAUSE THIS CODED PO507 to be high

Extracted from Engine-Codes.com

Code P0507

Possible causes

- Dirty throttle body

- Electric throttle control actuator misadjusted or damaged

- Faulty Electric throttle control actuator

- Intake air leak

- Poor electrical connection to the Intake Air Control (IAC) valve

help.jpg What does this mean?

Tech notes

If there are no intake leaks, clean throttle body, adjust engine idle and erase engine code. If the code comes back you may have to replaced the Electric Throttle Control Actuator (Motor) to repair the problem.

There is a factory service bulletin for the following Chevrolet models:

2006-2008 Chevrolet Trail Blazer

2007-2008 Chevrolet Avalanche

2007-2008 Chevrolet Express

2007-2008 Chevrolet Silverado

2007-2008 Chevrolet Suburban

2007-2008 Chevrolet Tahoe

Chevrolet Factory Service Bulletin OBDII Code P0507

What does this mean?

When is the code detected?

Thi P0507 code sets when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an engine speed outside of the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve range of control.

Possible symptoms

- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

- Engine hard to start

- Rough or erratic idle speed

P0507 Chevrolet Description

The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve is a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controlled stepper motor located on the throttle body. The stepper motor drives a valve pintle which protrudes into a passage that bypasses the throttle plates. The PCM commands the IAC valve pintle to extend to decrease the idle speed. The bypass air flow is reduced and the idle speed decreases as the pintle approaches its seat. The PCM retracts the IAC valve pintle away from its seat to increase the idle speed. The retracting of the IAC valve pintle allows more air to bypass the throttle plates. One of the PCMs uses for the IAC system is to maintain a desired idle speed. This DTC sets when the PCM detects an engine speed outside of the IAC\'s range of control.

What is the distributor timing mark for 89 chevy

Is the vacuum hose removed from the dist when the timing is being checked?
Are you connected to the first plug wire (closest to the rad) on the drivers side?
If this is being done.....remove the cap and rotor and check the springs on the mechanical advance, the advance should be tight to the shaft and springs tight.
I would set the base timing on this set up .....at idle speed...... at between 5 and 10 before TDC.

Remember......timing marks on modified engines are not always accurate. Parts from this year and that year put together.

1989 pontiac firebird 305 v8 starts and idles

Your idle air control valve may be dirty or the wire harness may be damaged. First try cleaning the throttle body with throttle body cleaner and make sure you use all the can up and try to get the idle air control valve cleaned. A faulty or dirty idle air control valve will cause engine to stall when put in to gear from idle. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, be glad to help you get your car running 100% soon.
