SOURCE: Hi, my problem is my bobbin. The tension is fine,

TENSION: As you change projects and start sewing on different weight materials, you should test stitch on a piece of scrap material of the same weight before beginning the actual project so you can adjust your upper tension to that particular fabric. As an example, if you're changing from a denim type fabric to a silky fabric, you would definitely want to make sure the tension is correct and the stitching looks right before you start to sew the garment.

To determine whether the upper tension is too tight or too loose for the fabric you're wanting to use, try the following test. Take a small scrap of the fabric, fold it, and stitch a line ON THE BIAS of the fabric, using different colors of thread in the bobbin and on top. Grasp the bias line of stitching between the thumb and the index finger. Space the hands about 3 inches apart and pull with an even, quick force until one thread breaks. If the broken thread is the color of the thread in the needle, it means that the upper tension is too tight. If the broken thread is the color of the bobbin thread, the upper tension is too loose. If both threads break together and take more force to break, it means that the tensions are balanced.

BOBBIN: The most probable cause of the lower thread breaking is an improperly wound bobbin. Regardless of where you wind the bobbin, inside the machine, on the top of the handwheel or on the front side near the hand wheel, the basic "bobbin" rules apply.

** Always start with an empty bobbin. Never wind one color over another color.
** Don't wind the bobbin so full that it would be tight and hard to insert into the bobbin case. Most machines have an automatic "shut off" when the bobbin gets full, but if yours does not, be careful not to fill it too full.
** Wind the bobbin evenly across and in level layers.
** Never mix different sizes of thread in the bobbin and on the spool, unless you're doing sewing machine embroidery or some specialty type of sewing. Using different weights of thread on the spool and in the bobbin for general sewing will cause ragged stitches as well as other stitching problems.

NEEDLE: Probably 25% of machine repair jobs I go out on, the only problem was that the needle was put in backwards. I know you're probably saying "I've been sewing most of my life and I know how to put the needle in the machine"; however many times a seamstress will get in a hurry and not give the needle a second thought when putting a new one in the machine. If your machine will not pick up the bottom thread or skips stitches badly, in most cases it's because the needle is in wrong.

Each sewing machine requires that the "flat" side of the needle be put in a specific way - facing the front, the back, etc., depending on your particular make and model. If you have a sewing machine that takes a needle that doesn't have a flat side, you'll notice that each needle has a groove in it where the thread lays as it penetrates the fabric. Depending on whether your machine shuttle system faces to the front or to the left, the groove of the needle will also face front or left.

MACHINE THREADING: An additional area to check for stitching problems is whether the sewing machine is threaded properly. Each machine has a certain sequence for threading, and it only takes one missed step in the sequence to cause your machine to skip stitches. If you're in doubt, take the top thread completely out and start all over again.

SOURCE: bobbin thread shows on top of machine embroidery

You are not getting bobbin tension somehow. Either not threaded correctly in the assembly or it needs to be adjusted tighter.

Baby lock quest plus and the bobbin thread is all loopy. I have done everything. I believe it is in tension discs. When I move it to 8 or 9 it sews ok. When I sew faster it seems to start looping.

Is it really the bobbin thread that is loopy--not the top thread looping under the fabric? If this is the case, it is called bird nesting. (problems appearing under the fabric are usually a top thread issue, problems on top of the fabric usually indicate a bobbin issue)

Remove the top thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. You may need to loosen the top tension to get it where it should be. The two threads should meet in the middle of the fabric.

If the bobbin thread is still too loose, then an adjustment may be needed to its tension.

Why stitches on top are great but bottom are loose and loopy?

Check your upper threading. Make sure it's between your tension discs. Remember loops on bottom, something is wrong with upper threading/tension. Loops on top something is wrong in the bobbin area (like the bobbin being in upside down or a loose bobbin tension spring)

start by rethreading the top thread with the presser foot UP.

How do I adjust my bobbin tension

The problem probably comes from not threading the top of the machine correctly. Take a look here: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/22521551 especially at the last pair of photos. The blue tangled thread is on the top of the machine, the red thread in the bobbin. Set the top tension to about 3-4, and rethread from scratch, this time with the presser foot raised. This causes the tension disks to open so the thread can get between them When you drop the presser foot to sew, the top thread is then tensioned and won't make loopy messes.

Whta is the answer to the curvy's thread/bobbin problems. super infuriating

If by "bobbin thread is usually too loose." you mean that you are seeing loopy stuff on top of your seam... then first you need to make sure your bobbin is un-spooling in the correct direction.

Also make sure that the tension spring on your bobbin case is not missing it's screw. Don't mess with the tension there yet... loosen your top tension first... sew on scrap fabric of the same type as your project. Loosen the top tension until you stop seeing loops on top of your seam. If you have loosened it enough to see loops on the bottom... tighten it a bit.

If all else fails make sure you re-thread the top thread with the pressure foot up position so you make sure you are getting the top thread in the tension discs and try test sewing again.

Brother cs-6000 will not sew, the top thread go through and tangles on back, and the bobbin thread is a straight line and can be easily pulled out, please help, trying to make kids school clothes

Hi:

Ok... so try to remember that loopy stuff on top means the bobbin tension is too loose (or the top tension is too tight...)

Loopy stuff on bottom, means the top tension is too loose. (or it's not threaded right)

Now. Get some scrap of the same material. Loosen that bobbin back to where it was. RETHREAD the top, with the foot in the UP position.

Place your scrap under the foot, and sew. still have problem? clip your threads and try again only this time hold the top and bottom threads off to the side as you begin to sew. How did that do?

Adjust the top tension to the point where you start seeing the bobbin thread come up in loops to the top... then back off until the disappear.

Now... be sure you have the correct thread and needle for your fabric. A lot of problem are caused by not having the proper needle and thread.

Tension problem

Set the top tension as recommended by the mfg - this is usually between 3 - 6.

Now re-thread the machine with the presser foot up and see if this doesn't eliminated the loopy stitches.

What appears to be an issue with the bobbin may actually be the top thread was not seated into the tension during threading and the tension cannot control the flow of thread to the needle and you get a loopy stitch.

Keep the bobbin case clean as built-up lint can cause stitching problems.

Singer 5430C bobbins thread always loopy

"Birdnesting" occurs when there is no tension on the needle thread to pull the bobbin thread. This is easily corrected by rethreading the machine, following the threading path carefully and making sure the thread is fully engaged in the tension mechanism.

THREAD GET BUNCHED UP UNDERNEATH THE FABRIC, THE STICHES SEEM TO BE INCOMPLETE THE TOP LOOKS GOOD THAN I TURN IT OVER AND THE THEAD IS BUNCHED AND LONG LOOPS OF THREAD ARE LEFT. THANKS LOU

Hi Lou! This sounds like a tension problem--the tension on the top thread is too loose. Try using different color threads on the top and bobbin, then carefully rethread everything. Stitch a couple of inches and check the underside. If the top stitches look fine and the bottom ones are loose and loopy, and with the pressure foot down, tighten the tension. Move the knob or dial (whichever you have) just a little bit. Sew a couple of inches more, and recheck. Continue to sew and recheck, gradually tightening the tension, until you see little if any bobbin thread on the top or top thread on the underside of the fabric.

Let me know if this helps, ok?

The top thread is really loopy on the underside of the fabric, sometimes it misses a stitch, sometimes, the upper thread breaks, and it often gets so tangled underneath that the machine won't feed.

Your tension is way too loose on top or too tight on the bobbin. Try adjusting the top tension one number at a time until you get it right. (Only adjust the bobbin tension as a last resort). Also you could have different thickness of thread in the bobbin than on the top or are sewing a very heavy fabric. Try adjusting the tension with same thread in both bobbin and top and use a normal weight fabric until you find the right tension to get you back to a normal stitch before going to a heavier fabric or thread.
