It sounds like the flap that controls air flow is stuck. It is controlled by vacuum. The vacuum line could be leaking, the line could be off, or the vacuum actuator could be faulty. Hope this helped.

SOURCE: When I turn my vent selector to defrost on the far

It's normal for the A/C compressor to come on with the defroster to dehumidify the air so the windsheild won't fog up under humid conditions. You can still control the air temp. out the vents with the temp. select switch.

SOURCE: All Air Conditioning blows our the defrost vents

Some thing you could look at would be this. The control is usually fed by a vacuum line or small hose thats is connected to your intake manifold.
With a cold engine, look for a skinny vacuum hose that runs from the intake toward the fire wall . It should be going inside the cab and connecting to the A/C vent control. Some times the hose becomes disconnected or splits or cracks due to heat under the hood.
Thats usually the trouble.
I hope this helps you.

SOURCE: blowes air throught defrost vents only

its a problem with the switching mechanism. you have to look up under the dash to see if you can see where the switching mechanism is. if you can not see it from there youll have to remove complete center dash

SOURCE: Air conditioning blows cold through

Your control valve for your duct work is having a small problem, its just not opening. The duck system work lid the heat/ac ducts at your home. The only difference is you can control through a vacuum controlled valve where you want the air to flow. What has happened, is the valve has shut the system at the neck( where duct is connected for all the vents) There are three areas that could be wrong. 1- a vacuum line has come apart or broke( they are just made of rubber). The line would have to be replaced. 2- the controlling valve is stuck, and either needs to be unjammed or replaced. 3- your control unit(mounted on the dash, the one you use to adjust everything) has gone out. Being you have an older car(great year for caprice)you also have some cables on the control unit. One of these may have gave way(broke) or the plastic clips that hold them may have snapped. You can manually ope the vents from under the dash. It will be under the center toward the passenger side. You will see the ducts leading back to your control box. you can also see the rads and control lines there. just adjust the arm til you get air in the vents. its a tight fit, smaller hand work great for that. I hope this helps you

SOURCE: air conditioning not blowing thru the vents

There is a black vacuum hose in back of the glove box toward the top connected to a gray hose about 1/8 thick. You need to check to see if there is vacumm there. If yes then you need to take the bolts off to be able to tip the dash back enough to see all the vacuum hoses.Make sure they are all connected. It was alot of bolts but its is the best way.I had a hose off going to one of the acuator doors.Glued it back on and works great

AC is only blowing through the defrost vents in the dashboard?

I think your problem is the head unit that selects where the air comes out ie. Face, floor, defrost, or hi-level face and floor. If that's not working then it will not let you switch location that you want the air to come out.

Air stopped blowing through vents, only blows through defroster

Make sure all your vacuum hoses are connected on the engine side. There is a vacuum ball mounted close to or on the fender wall. Make sure that the hose is connected to the vacuum ball. Question: Has the engine started to run rough lately? And do you hear a hissing sound or whistle from the dash area?
