Hi Suman Biswas,

There is a possibility that the USB ports may have failed. Try connecting different USB devices like USB mouse or USB keyboard to the other ports also and check if that helps. If not then do email me the system service tag along customer name, place of purchase, address, phone number and email address to [email protected]. Then I can check and see what can be done.

Thanks and Regards.
Kiran Kumar.

Hi, Please try going to device manager and refresh the drivers by following the below steps: (1) Click start (2) Type device in the search box and select device manager. (3) Detect USB and right click uninstall it. (4) Now restart the computer. Check if this helps if not then do email me the screenshot of device manger also press the ‘+’ button next to it which expands all the options.

Your USB ports on your Dell computer are plug and play. If you have issues with your USB port, it is port related, driver related or device related. The following solutions will help you identify the problem to resolve your USB port issues.
To Identify a Working USB Port
Begin troubleshooting your USB ports by checking Device Manager to see if your USB ports or hubs are working properly.

  1. Click the Start button. ClickControl Panel.
  2. ClickSystem and Maintenance.
  3. ClickDevice Manager.
  4. Double-clickUniversal Serial Bus controllersand check to see if all your USB ports, hubs and controllers are functioning correctly. Any devices not functioning will have a yellow exclamation mark in front of them.
  5. If Device Manager shows any USB ports, hubs or controllers are not functioning, check for updated drivers.

To Update the USB Port Driver

An out-of-date BIOS driver can create issues with your system recognizing the USB port.
  • Watch a Video on Steps to Update Bios on Your Computer.
    1. When the update process is complete, your computer will restart again to load the operating system with the new driver version installed.

To Run a Diagnostic Test on your USB Port

Dell has an online diagnostic tool to help identify and fix issues with your system.
  1. Go to theDell PC Diagnosticpage
  2. UnderChoose a Diagnostic Type, selectHardware.
  3. Using the scroll bar on the right-hand side of the window below, locate the listing for USB.
  4. SelectUSB.
  5. ClickRun Diagnostics.
  6. Agreeto Terms and Conditions in Legal Statement.
  7. Follow the instructions to test each USB port.

My Dell Laptop USB ports are not working any more

Do they not work on any device? Have you tried using a device that they used to detect in the past? Maybe the device you are using is too advanced for the old D600. For example, I would imagine it would have a hard time detecting a 1TB external hard drive.

If it will not detect a device that used to work in the past I would go into the BIOS or System Setup and make sure the USB is enabled. When you turn the laptop on just watch the screen and it will tell you which key to hit to get into the Bios or System Setup. I think it is the F2 key for the D600.

USB PORT NOT WORKING.

Both USB ports use the same driver, so if one works and one doesn't, you have a mechanically bad port. You'll need to replace the hardware to solve the problem. There are usually a lot of bad D600 motherboards on Ebay. Or try to find just the USB port you need. Fairly simple replacement task, but laptop dis-assembly will be required to reach the part.

Hi Roger,

The Windows command you used to uninstall the USB port is correct. If they all work bar one, then i think its safe to say it's possibly a hardware issue.

The only other fix i can think of is to update the BIOS with the latest version from the Dell support website.

Good luck.

You can use a powered USB hub to charge your iPod, MP3 player etc. without connecting to a laptop's computer USB port.
Just connect the mains adapter to the USB hub and then plug your iPod into the hub for as long as you need.
You can also use this hub for your computer/laptop when you need extra USB ports..

hi!

Have you tried reinstalling the OS? If reinstalling the OS still won't work, then the motherboard could be shot and needs replacement.

Hope this helps.
