Read manufacturer directions thoroughly. Measure smallest height and width dimensions of existing aluminum window frame for rough opening at several locations. Order retrofit window 1/2 inch smaller on each side. Remove old glass and center aluminum stave. Trim fin of new window as little as possible so it fits against outside face of confined edges of outside facing part of existing frame. Drill holes in frame as manufacturer instructions dictate. Test fit window and mark where outside trimmed fin ends on wall. Measure for shims at gaps between new and old inside frames. Install shims with Lock time PL caulking. Caulk existing window frame corners, holes from removing center stave, and a 1/2 inch bead within the area marked on exterior wall. Place window and push into caulk. Make sure there is full contact with caulk. Drill pilot holes at screw locations drilled earlier, Place silicone caulking on screw heads and screw window in place. Square up window while screwing. Trim inside of window and plug holes from screws. Good luck.

What is the difference between single glazed and double glazed windows?

talk with window suppliers as it is significant
the cost is the different aluminum moulding required ti hold 2 pieces of glass and if necessary the vacuum requirement to reduce thermal transfer
The very big advantage is the sound reduction that is obtained ( can be more than 20 dbl) if noise is a problem so if you are in a very noisy environment with extreme weather temperatures then double glazing must be in your consideration

How can I tell if my window is single or double glazed?

Double glazing works by trapping air between two layers of glass. Therefore, single-glazed windows have only one pane of glass whilst double-glazed windows have two. In most cases, you can simply inspect the window by opening it up and looking at it from the side to see if there are two panes.

There should be a noticeable gap between the two which may be filled with aluminium foil. The gap is usually around one to two inches wide.

If for some reason you can't tell by looking at it, or the window won't open, you can try using a torch. Shine the torchlight through your window and check to see how many spots of light appear. If you see two spots of light, there are two panes and your window is double glazed.

If your windows are old (pre-1980s) and haven't been updated, they're probably single-glazed. If you've had them installed in the last decade or so they're more likely to be double-glazed.

How do i get rid of mist in my double glazing without changing them?

You can't. What this means is that the seal between the panes has broken down, and every time the window heats up (in the sun) air is expelled, and when it cools, air is drawn in, with moisture to boot. You will always have that issue. However, you can have replacement units made up that will fit into the existing window frame. Any good glazing company will be able to get a double glazed unit made up to fit into the existing window.

What size central a/c,heater do I need to cool-heat a 2400 sq/ft house in west Texas

You haven't included enough information to give you an accurate number. Things to consider are:
- R value of attic and wall insulation
-cubic footage of the living area
-are the windows single double or triple paned... low E ?
-how many hours of direct sun?
-how many points of return air do you have?

Its better to over size your system than to undersize.

One more thing to consider.... heat rises, cooled air falls and if you want to run your ducting under the house? insulate the crawlspace walls.

Under a window

By a window is fairly vague? How close would it be? the only concern would be that the heat (if there would be any) would cause a Insulated window (double pane) to fail (fog up)

Ruud Furnace needs replacement

What part of the country?
How many square feet in the house?
Insulation?
Single pane glass?
Many factors should be considered by a professional.
However if the old unit worked OK, a new 80% 70,000 unit will most likeley replace a 24 year old 60-70% 75,000 unit.
