I am trying to wire up a new switch

there should be a safety latch on the right ..down by the base or at the back you should have to press down on the saw to release it.hope that helps..

The Switching should go like this
(single letters denote wire color)

B---o o---B
The contacts where the black wires attach are the points on the switch that break when continuity is checked.

Here's a link to an exploded parts diagram that has a basic wiring diagram included within it. That should be enough for you to get the switch installed. The model is an HD-77. If yours is different, see here for other options.

You may find, you have a lock, button, that needs to be held in, before you can drop the saw to cut.
