SOURCE: My cast iron original hunter ceiling fan needs a

Howdy,

There are a couple of issues which can cause this with the Original. First, is this an American made fan, or a Chinese made fan? The main difference between the two is the motor type. The Chinese version should have an "A" after the model#.

First question, when you turn the fan off, how long does it take to come to a stop? From high speed it should take at least 60 seconds, from low at least 20 seconds or so. Also, are you trying to start this fan from a wall switch on low speed?

The first issue which can cause this is oil level, I know you say it has plenty of oil, but, depending on how you checked it, it may not be enough in the reservoir. To check it, you take a pipe cleaner and bend it over to form a J with the hook portion being 3/8"-1/2" long and dip it into the oil cup at the top of the switch housing as said in the below links. Remember, if you have a Chinese fan from 2002-2007 (after 2007 there is a brass cap on top of the motor where you add the oil and it functions the same as the American fans), the oil hole will be on the switch housing and you must lean the motor over to add oil, if you add it with the motor level there will not be enough oil in the reservoir. If you are indeed full of oil, run the fan on high, and with a LARGE screwdriver used as a stethoscope, remove the switch housing cap (two screws) and insert it all the way to the top of the switch housing and put your ear to the other side of it, then turn the fan off and while it coasts down listen. You should hear very little noise if anything at all, it should be totally smooth oil if circulating through the oil system, if it sounds dry and gritty or like metal on metal, then oil is NOT getting to the top of the armature. If this turns out to be your problem, I can help you fix it.

The second issue which could cause this, is the capacitor is getting weak and the motor isn't generating enough torque to start. I think this is fairly unlikely as I have never seen an Original with a bad cap.

The third issue could be that, if the oil is where it is supposed to be and if you have tried putting an extra snort in the oil hole and that doesn't cure it, that something has gotten into the oil reservoir and is binding the bearing up. Bugs seem to love the oil cups of these fans for some reason and I have discovered wasps, beetles and flies in the oil cups before when dis-assembling these fans for repair. If you have exhausted the other possibilities, remove the fan and drain the oil out of it, shake the fan a few times to make the rotor bang back and forth and then re-install the fan and re-fill with new 10wt oil. (do not use 3-in one oil in either the red or blue can, both of which contain napatha)

If you have the American made fan, this is the owners manual http://www.hunterfanhq.com/tools/sales/hunter/preseason/images/owners/41532.pdf
If you have the Chinese fan, this is the owners manual for it http://www.hunterfan.com/uploadedFiles/Support/Owner_Manuals/41556.pdf

If this is an American made fan, it's worth repairing, if it is NOT an American made fan and after troubleshooting it and not finding a fix, I recommend calling Hunter and warrantying the unit out. The motors carry a lifetime warranty.

Testimonial: "Thank you. The fan is running great now! It is the American fan. Bugs must have been the problem."

How To oil hunter fan catalog 22272-004. Can't find my 1980 owners manual which used to give instructions.

Checking Oil

Check oil level immediately after fill- ing the reservoir. To check oil, bend an ordinary pipe cleaner into a 1/2" long hook and dip it into the oil reser- voir. If oil touches the end of the pipe cleaner, the fan has ample oil. If it does not touch, add SAE 10 non-detergent oil slowly until it touches the pipe cleaner.

Your Original Hunter's unique lubricating system

The bearings are submerged in a bath of oil. The oil moves up a spiral groove in the shaft, lubricating all bearing surfaces as the fan operates. This Lubrication System does not normally "use up" or require the addition of extra oil once the oil reservoir has been filled to the correct level. This unique lubrication system is one reason your Original Hunter Ceiling Fan will last a lifetime. It is highly unlikely that you will ever need to add oil to your Original fan once it is installed. Should you move your fan to another location, it is a good idea to check the oil reservoir. Hunter has developed an accessory 'Original Relocation Kit' that includes all mounting hardware and a fresh tube of oil for this reason. The model number is 22360.
CAUTION: DO NOT TURN FAN ON UNTIL LUBRICATION HAS BEEN ADDED. TO OPERATE THE FAN WITHOUT OIL OR WITH LOW OIL WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY

Adding oil

Your fan has been shipped without
oil in the motor. A 1-ounce tube of
high grade SAE 10 non-detergent oil
is packaged in the sack parts. All the
oil in the tube must be put into the
fan. Cut the tip off the tube and place the tube into the oil hole. To avoid overflowing during filling, allow oil to gravity flow about one minute to fill the oil reservoir. (It may be necessary to puncture the tube to allow air in.)

What to do if fan is frozen up

You need to put some Hunter oil then push the blades around by hand to get the bearings lubed. Then check oil level and add more oil if necessary.

A customer of mine has a very nice Hunter original ceiling fan that she never oiled and now the fan just hums and wont spin. Is it possible to repair after no oil damage is done?

Put some oil in and turn blades by hand to lubricate the bearings. If the motor is frozen, then you would have to take it to a service center or send back to Hunter for repair.

Howdy,

Sounds like a good ol' American made Hunter Original to me. BEST and most powerful residential ceiling fan (high quality) ever made. The RPM spec is 200-160-50 for the respective speeds, moving 10,500 CFM on high speed. Most ceiling fans barely crack 5,000 CFM. they were built for Brute Force Air Movement and they really don't do well for small spaces. The best solution I have for you is if you have a Wall switch for this fan, to install a Hunter Original Wall control or remote control. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=hunter+original+control&_sacat=See-All-Categories

Both controls will lower the Medium speed to about 100-110 rpm, which should be much more comfortable for you.

Because the Hunter Original (I know your fan is an American made unit by your wire colors) draws more current than other fans, the Original controls are the only controls that are designed to work with your fan. Other controls do not have the current capacity for the Original motor.

Also, are you aware your fan uses oil?

I purchased the hunter outdoor fan about 3 years ago. All three of them are leaking oil. What is the problem?

Might be overfilled on oil. Oil should be only 1/2 " from the top of the reservoir. also check that the reservoir tank is on tight. Note (Left land treads).

Howdy,

Assuming these ceiling fans are infact the 23827 Hunter Original, did you put the bottle of oil which came with the fan in them? The Hunter original requires this bottle of oil for lubrication. If you had them installed, the installer may have not put the oil in.

with the motor/s off, spin the blades. Do they spin for a long time, or do they come to a stop quickly? If these fans were just installed, the biggest likelyhood is that the bearings are seizing from lack of lubrication.

The oil hole may be on the switch housing, as in this .pdf http://www.hunterfan.com/uploadedFiles/Support/Owner_Manuals/41556.pdf

Or it may be on top of the fan, as in this .pdf http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfimages/52/527f2153-5314-45aa-8cd1-310b94adc671.pdf

Check/add oil to a hunter ceiling fan

If you are asking for instructions on checking and possibly adding oil to a Hunter Original fan. Here are instructions:

Check oil level immediately after filling the reservoir. To check oil, bend an ordinary pipe cleaner into a 1/2" long hook and dip it into the oil reservoir.

If oil touches the end of the pipe cleaner, the fan has ample oil. If it does not touch, add SAE 10 non-detergent oil slowly until it touches the pipe cleaner.

-Hunter Original fans rarely/ never need oil unless they were relocated or tipped. ...Or if the fan was improperly installed.

-Hunter sells an oil refill / oil level check kit with good instructions. They also sell a relocation kit that includes the same kit plus all mounting hardware needed.

Good Luck!
