SOURCE: I have a Singer Sewing Machine 5817C, the thread

Make sure that there is tension on the thread when you have passed it through the tension unit, by making sure the presser foot is down, and then gently pulling the thread to feel tension. If there is no tension, as seems to be the case, check the tension discs inside the unit to make sure that there is no debris stopping them from closing.

SOURCE: Singer 301a...sews on top of fabric

This is a tension adjustment problem. It's good to use two different colors of thread, like you did. From your description, the top thread (needle thread) tension needs to be tighter. As you tighten the tension of the top thread, you'll see that the top thread pulls the bobbin thread up into the fabric so it's no longer laying loose on the bottom of the fabric.

You'll need to have the pressure foot down when you tighten the tension. Tighten it a little, sew a practice seam, check to see what the stitch looks like. Tighten it a little more, sew, check, etc etc--until both top and bottom look the same--you shouldn't see much (if any) of the bobbin thread color on top of the fabric or the top thread color on the underside.

Let me know how this works for you, ok?

As for the bobbin thread not picking up it could be your hook timing is off. Do you know how to adjust this?

My bottom tention of Bernina Deco 340 is to loose. How to I correct is. The top treat shows to much at the bottom

Um, the top thread is showing on the bottom of the fabric? The top tension is too loose. The two threads create a tension battle, one pulling against the other. To pull the bobbin thread up, tighten the top tension. The tension is accurate when the two threads meet "in the middle" of the fabric. On thinner fabric, you might see a tiny spot of bobbin thread on the top and a tiny spot of top thread on the bottom.

I am using a different coloured tread on the top than on the you can see the top thread on the bottom. Why is this happening.

Your tensions are off. Most likely you can correct it by tightening the top tension until the threads meet in the middle of the fabric. Tensions are not static--you may need to adjust it when changing sewing projects using different fabrics & thread.

Can't get tension right have adjusted tension dial but when you pull the thread it just pulls out like tacking stitch

make sure that it is threaded correctly between the tension plates
correct tension is when you pull the thread as if to thread the needle there should be a slight resistance to you pulling the thread

How to adjust tension?

Consult the owner's manual. Be sure to always RAISE the presser foot when threading the upper thread.

Test the stitch. If the thread is looping under the fabric, the upper thread tension is too loose. If the bottom thread shows on the top of the fabric, the upper tension is too tight. The tension is correct when the two threads (top & bobbin) meet in the middle of the fabric.

NOTE: when you change needle/thread/fabric, the tension should be tested on a piece of the project's scrap fabric and readjusted before beginning the project. Tension is static and should be adjusted every time a project is changed. (One tension will not work for every project, so get comfortable with tweaking.) Be sure to change needles frequently (damaged needles are an inexpensive fix for a lot of sewing issues). Making sure needle/thread/fabric are compatible is very important. All About Needles

My machine bunches tread on the bottom of the fabric when sewing. What am I doing wrong. This machine is new to me.

thread bunching under material is an indication that the needle thread is not at the correct tension
tighten up the tension setting until the result is where the both treads meet at the center of the materials being sewn
practice on pieces of scrap until you get it right

Bobbin tension trouble

Hi
When the tread gives trouble on the bottom of the fabric, it is the top thread that causes it.
Check your top tension.

If not your needle could be dull so u might have to change it.

Stitch too tight on top, too loose on bottom

This is a problem with thread tension. The needle thread is too tight and the bobbin thread is too loose. I don't have one of these machines, but there should be either screws or knobs to adjust. Look at your manual. Here's a page I found on bobbin tension.

The tread gets all tangled on the bottom of the fabric

You seem to have a threading error. Try re-threading top and bottom threads completely. Sometimes the thread does not pass through the out of sight tension discs correctly.
You may also have something stuck in the discs so pull a thicker thread through by hand to clean.
If this does not work, find a spare piece of similar fabric and set all the visible tension discs to "0" and try again, then work through each one by altering the tension slightly each time..

The fabric is being ruined by the feeder under the fabric. It is not the needle.

It could be different things, the tread may not be locked in the top tension, you may have treads all wrapped up around the bottom bobbin. Take out the bobbin and look, re-thread the entire machine.
