Does the knocking sound increase with engine speed? Check all the things run by the belts, like A/C, alternator, etc. by removing the belts and starting the engine. If there is no more knocking, then check those components. If the knocking is still, you may have an internal engine problem like main or rod bearing failures. Check the engine oil for any metal flakes.

Check engine light is frequently a loose fuel cap, but the other problem could be a bad fuel pump, or a clogged fuel filter. Try the fuel filter first - its the cheapest.

SOURCE: oil light goes on and off and engine has a knocking sound.

This sounds like severe engine damage, do to loss of internal lubrication (no oil). That's the bad thing about 'idiot' warning lights, they come on when u have a severe problem, and the damage is done. You are going to probably have to purchase a used engine from an auto salvage yard, or purchase a re -manufactured engine. Sorry for the bad news, this is about as bad as it gets.

Smoke on start? Could be a valve problem where all your oil is in the bottom at start? Belts are squeaking too? Maybe a tensioner went bad?

Saw this service bulletin---

TAPPING / KNOCKING NOISE FROM ENGINE AT COLD START
This bulletin amends ITB02-049. This version amends the Applied Vehicles.
Please discard all paper copies of the earlier version.
APPLIED VEHICLE: 2002 - 2004 Q45 (F50)
2003 - 2004 M45 (Y34)
2003 - 2004 FX45 (S50) with V8 engine.
IF YOU CONFIRM:
A tapping or knocking noise (similar to a piston or valvetrain noise) when starting a cold engine,
NOTE: The engine is considered “cold” when it has been OFF (not running) for several hours.
ACTIONS:
1. Dislodge and remove any carbon deposits that may have caused the noise and confirm that carbon
deposits were the cause of the noise.
• While the noise is occurring, quickly rev the engine several times to approximately 4,000 RPM. Then
release the accelerator quickly, as soon as the engine reaches 4,000 RPM.
• The noise should disappear immediately if carbon deposits are the cause.
NOTE:
• If the customer reported a noise that exactly matches the symptoms listed above, but you cannot
duplicate it, the cause may still be carbon deposits. Go to step 2.
• If the noise does not stop after revving the engine, or you observe any other noise that doesn’t match
one described above, go back to ASIST for further diagnostic and repair information.
2. To prevent this incident from occurring again, add a bottle of Nissan In-Tank Fuel System Cleaner
P/N 999MP-FSC00P to a full tank of fuel (in the vehicle’s fuel tank) according to the instructions on the
label.
• This product is proven to reduce carbon deposits on pistons and combustion chambers, as well as
cleaning other components of the fuel system.

Hope helps.

SOURCE: 2001 land rover Disco II td5 not starting - no fault

Check the crank and cam position sensors...sometimes they don't kick the SES light on until they fail. one of the main symptoms of the cam position sensor failing is the "no start, but cranks fine" issue. This happens especially when the engine has been driven and is warm. If the sensor has failed, the engine won't start at all, and everything else will seem fine..the part is usually cheap at the store, and usually easy to replace since it will be near the top of the engine somewhere. I'd start with that and see how it goes...The other sensor I mentioned is also critical in the timing of the engine the "crank sensor" if it fails, it may also cause that situation. The two sensors together tell the CPU where the cam and crank are in their timing sequences. If one isn't working, the CPU won't know where to fire what cylinder, so it just won't fire any of them. ie: No Start. I would replace them both just to be sure. Since you have checked everything else, and it cranks, I can't think of anything else at this point. Good luck. :)

How do u clean out a fuel injection on a 07 Nissan versa

You can try using a good quality injector cleaning fluid. Add the fluid to your fuel tank. Start the vehicle and let it idle until it is up to working temperature.
Do NOT rev the car up or take it for a drive. This thins the mixture reducing the cleaning effect. Let it idle for a few more minutes then stop the engine and let it go cold. After this, drive the vehicle as normal. Do not fill the fuel tank as this will dilute the mixture. Run the vehicle until you fuel light comes on and then fill it as normal.
If this does not solve the issue your only other option is to get a specialist to strip the injectors out or just replacing them.

Why is my 97 Nissan pu still trying to stall after they diagnosed it with a bad mass air flow sensor, replaced and it is still trying to stall AND the check engine light came back on?

Most of us know how the injectors get clogged. Its nothing else but the fuel that we use which causes clogging. Every time we turn off our car's engine, last drop of petrol dries on the nozzle of the injector and leaves behind deposits. These deposits become firm with the heat of the chamber. The more we drive our car, more deposits accumulate. Gradually it starts to restrict the flow of petrol from the tiny hole on the nozzle and the injector starts to lose its efficiency. This causes the engine to lean misfire and hesitate on different rpm, power and pickup is lost, the car becomes uneconomical on petrol, unburnt fuel can be noticed in the emission and worst of all the wear of engine becomes faster. Only 8% to 10 % clogging in the nozzle can cause all this

Proper cleaning can restore their like-new performance. There is no need to replace fuel injectors unless they are actually gone bad. Injectors are designed in such a way that they are not very convenient to clean. They are sealed units and cannot be opened for cleaning. Ultrasonic cleaning is MOST effective process for cleaning fuel injectors. It is cheap and comprehensive solution for the problem.

Hyundai sonata 2005 model is not starting properly. Recently changed fuel pump & filter, spark plugs, and air filter. One week back I cleaned fuel injector . After that I got this problem. If I am...

why was injector cleaned?was there problem already that caused you to clean them?just one or the all of them?and was it done on the car or were they removed to clean? How were they cleaned.you may have an injector leaking and when left it floods a cylinder making it hard to start.check everything that was removed, look for any leaks or listen when idling for air leaks. You have not mentioned how it runs, whether it is rough or down on power, this will help us to track fault better.May be check that all the injector plugs are on the right ones.hope this helps.

Just got the coil and spark plug changed as the car was sounding and driving abit rough. seemed to do the job, but after week i took it on a slighlty longer drive on the highway (40 mins) and it went back...

I would say check your Mass Air Flow sensor. Take it off, and clean it really good, and run a can of Sea Foam through the tank. You can get it at any parts store. It is an additive for cleaning your engine and helps a lot for stuck lifters and gunk. If that doesn't help, I would say the fuel system would be your next step. Jerking tells me that air/fuel mix is disrupted, or your spark which from what you are saying has been eliminated.
