pretty neat trick, hats off to you, i had my shutter button break as well see below

My thumbtack seems to work, though any type of "pre focus" is out the window, and if you latch the tape down to tight it will hold the shutter open, not a good thing for the drive motors.

    otherwise very inventive

    ***************

    Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to add my name to
the growing list of people who have lost their shutter buttons. Mine
was lost on a ski trip last night (but unlike normal consumers, I work
for the associated press and mine was lost while on assignment) we
NEVER take larger cameras on teh mountains and i would love to bill
sony for this as it cost me lots of good photos. One thing was i
thought i had broken it but i couldnt for the life of me figure out
how, i am rough with my gear but on this night had done nothing out of
    the ordinary.
I am guessing sony (like all other companys) is
letting the japs or ostrich lovers make the parts nowadays. This would
explain the crappy performance of the zoom in video mode, lousy focus
in and out during hd videos (our camera has an hd converter custom
built in with a wifi that reaches up to a mile so images can be
offloaded once taken immediately) and now the button. Dont even get me
started on the lousy battery life.
Well i am off to try the thumbtack option, i am not giving sony (or its foreign incompetent slave workers) any more of my money.
I am not saying not to buy sony btw, just beware what you are getting, obviously someone screwed up on the design.
Good camera otherwise though, nice clear pictures overall!

Here is a $2 fix to this problem.
It just takes some electrical tape, a small piece of manila paper or similar and one thumbtack.

After the silver shutter button fell off, I tried a thumbtack and found that it did a good job of doing the pre-focus and capturing of the image. I then took a piece of black electrical tape about 3 inches long and in the middle, pasted on a small circle of construction paper or manila folder type of paper slightly bigger than the head of the thumbtack. This piece of cardboard will lie on top of the thumbtack head. This prevents the electrical tape from sticking directly to the thumbtack so that the thumbtack is free to move up and down (and trapped in position) without being stuck to the tape. I then put the electrical tape in position so that the thumbtack is held with its pin stuck into the shutter button.

Works well and doesn't look that bad either since the black tape blends into the body and the thumbtack is not visible.

I have used a piece of pencil rubber cut in the size of the hole after removal of the shutter button. The squared form makes it fixed to the camera for some time, but I have to change the rubber. In the rubber I pin a piece for paper clip, but the thumbtack sounds better. I has been working for 1½ year now. The button broke in the camera bag - fine when placing the camera and of when pulling it [email protected]

I have a Sony H5 camera. I just notice that if I go to take a picture I press the button, the green light flashers and then it snaps it with pressing all the way down

Greetings - That's how the camera was designed to work. Pressing the shutter half way down makes the camera auto focus. When it's in focus it turns solid green and you then press the shutter all the way down.

I suggest you read the getting started guide that comes with your camera or on line HERE.

Enjoy your camera and thanks for using Fix Ya

I have a Sony Cyber shot DSC-H2. When the shutter button is depressed halfway, it does not focus as it should do. Is there a simple solution to this?

The Sony DSC-H2 and DSC-H5 have a terrible shutter button design and the tiny little "bubble" that is responsible for the "half press focus" can be easily damaged.

If you do a Google search for "Sony shutter button repair" you will see the #1, 2 and 3 links are all for www darntoothysam com. We have done hundreds of this repair over the years!

The repair service is just $70 total IF we can repair it without replacing the part, installation and return shipping of the camera. Please visit our site, we would be happy to service your camera.

Hope this helps!

The button you press while taking the picture came off.

The Sony DSC-H2 and DSC-H5 have a terrible shutter button design and Sony will not admit that it's a design problem. The post for the shutter button is so thin that it snaps in half very easily!!

My LCD dose not display anything. If I take a picture nothing shows up at all only a black screen. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H5 is about 2 and half years old. Please help and many thanks My shutter...

Unless it has recently been dropped or the screen cracked, the LCD power drive circuit has failed. Your batteries sound OK if it is taking pictures. 2 and a half years is not an unreasonable life for this camera. I would spend my money and time working toward a new one rather than repairs. Sometimes you can find one on Ebay for parts and may be worth a purchase but don't waste anything on a factory repair. Taking them apart and replacing components is not that difficult and procedures can be obtained online from digital camera REPAIR FORUMS.

I have a Sony DSC-H5 and the shutter button does not allow me to push it half way -- only all-the-way -- the macro won't focus.

It is a common problem on this model. You need to replace the control assembly to fix the problem. Here is a link to show you how to replace the assembly and where to get the part.

Auto focus

Are you sure you did not activate "Manual Focus"?
Near the shutter button, there's a "Focus" button. maybe you pressed it accidentally and now you're in "Manual Focus" mode.

If so, press it once more to get "Multipoint" mode back to life...

And read the camera manual. It's a goot place to look for this kind of answers.
