Because of the fact that you can connect to your network without cable since it's unsecured you don't need to connect by cable. Skip this part and carry on with going to the routers settings site then to router wireless settings and password change. Remember to choose WPA method of security. Good Luck and please let me know if this was any helpful.
The router works only if the network is unsecured. When you secure the wireless network , make sure that you will change the wireless network name also. Because if you change the wireless security and if you keep the same network name then your computer will try to connect to the same network name with the old unsecured settings saved on the computer. Try to change the SSID ( network name ) and security to WPA, check if that works. If that doesn't work then I believe you will need to upgrade the FIRMWARE of the router.

You can restore the Belkin back to the factory default by powering up the Belkin and press the RESET button for 7 secs.
It is not wise to leave your wireless router unsecured, anyone can access your network and Internet connection and use up your allocated download limit. Once you exceed your download limit you could be slug with addition charges - this depends upon your contract with your ISP.

Log in to the router, check Wireless settings, Security is in the same area. I find that WPA-PSK[TKIP] is the easiest type to use, as you can use pretty much any sort of password longer than 7 characters. This can be done with the wired connection.
