many mercury motors use a rubber mounted prop on the shaft which is a sacrificial idea to prevent gear box damage and prop damage in with under water objects
what you suggests indicates that at certain load situations that rubber has failed and allowing the shaft to turn but is not driving the prop as required
It is driving just enough to give you steerage to get home
You can leave the shift lever in forward gear as the system is sprung loaded so that if anything goes wrong at sea with the linkage there is always the option of getting home.
just be careful to ensure smooth relocation on the splined shaft into the linkage socket when reassembling. Before fully tightening the casing bolts on reassembly bring the remote back into the neutral position, then see if the prop spins freely without engaging any gears. If happy finally torque up the five casing bolts.
go google and type in-- workshop manual for mercury optimax outboard-- there is apage mercury- marine.servicemanualvault.com
which sows manual in pdf form for $4.95 a down load
run through the pages to find the transmission section and if it suits what you want , down load it and have a manual for all the items you need to do
talk with a mercury service shop and get the details of how to do it
I'm sure that you have to remove the leg from the power head so that you can get the selection lever free from the forward/ reverse dog before that gears will come out of the case
Once the fuel and oil are mixed, there is a problem with the seal of the generator set, which happens from time to time in use. It might indicates that the seal of the generator is out of order. Or it can be caused by excessive cleareance between piston and cylinder.
1. Pump membrane rot or degumming, so that diesel oil into the oil tank and oil mixing.
2. The injector has low opening pressure and poor atomization, which causes diesel oil to flow into the oil pan and oil along the cylinder wall.
3. The oil seal of the front end of the fuel injection pump is invalid, and the check hole cover of the gear chamber cover is removed.
