Mercury's can't be identified by serial number. Please give the model number ( horsepower ) and length ( S L XL ). So it will be possible to identify your motor and give an approximative weight.

Look first if you don't have too much free play in your remote control cable.
Then try to adjust the cable to have your neutral position more to the reverse position.
the setting is in the engine lower cover at port side
you'll have to move the slot open, retire a bit the cable and turn the plastic holder a bit forward.
If this still doesn't work, you'll have to check the clutch dog in the gearhouse...

urns out, though, the magic word in the search appears to be "six" beeps and then some things popped up.
A bit of info out there, but from what I can gather, it needs to go to the dealer for diagnostics.

You can leave the shift lever in forward gear as the system is sprung loaded so that if anything goes wrong at sea with the linkage there is always the option of getting home.
just be careful to ensure smooth relocation on the splined shaft into the linkage socket when reassembling. Before fully tightening the casing bolts on reassembly bring the remote back into the neutral position, then see if the prop spins freely without engaging any gears. If happy finally torque up the five casing bolts.
