SOURCE: Microwave external underside light no longer works

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

The lights fan can be inoperable or stuck on or no bright, too. Sometimes this will similarly affect the exhaust fan operation, too.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number from the tag on the unit) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SOURCE: My over the range microwave oven light(underneath)

Maybe. In some Whirlpool models there are several fuses.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

SOURCE: The range-top light blew and now replacement bulbs

My Whirlpool/Roper microwave/hood combo has the same problem. I replaced the bulb twice, checked the bulb and it works, but not in the microwave. I wrote to Whirlpool asking about the problem. Haven't heard from them yet.

I shorted out the counter lights on my frigidair microwave. The microwave works but not the lights. I've replaced the bulbs. What next?

The metal base may have fused together from electrical arcing when the old bulb was removed. The entire bulb receptacle (socket) will have to replaced. If you cannot do that yourself, the cost would be excessive. Just live without the light as long as the microwave gets the job done.

Turntable, lights and fan inop

sounds like a cross wire, and a short. I'd inspect the socket for the bulbs to ensure that there's no short circuit.

How to change the light bulb

What kind of microwave oven is this? A counter-top model or an over-the-range microwave? Do you have a brand and model number? And which light bulb do you want to replace - the cavity light bulb, or the bottom light(s) of an OTR microwave?

Frigidaire microwave oven

Hello - This may or may not be specifically for your model, however these are generics instructions that I found.

To replace the light bulb to the over the range microwave you will need to follow the steps below:

1. To replace light bulb, first disconnect power to the microwave oven at the circuit breaker panel or by unplugging.

2. Remove the vent grill mounting screws.

3. Pull the vent grill away from the unit.

4. Remove the charcoal filter by pushing it inwards, then turn and pull it away from the unit.

5. Open light cover located behind filter mounting by carefully pulling up on the front edge.

6. Remove old light bulb and replace only with equivalent 30 watt bulb available from part distributor. Bulbs are also available at most hardware stores or lighting centers.

7. Replacing the microwave oven light cover by carefully pushing into place. Replace the charcoal filter. Push the vent grill back into place (engaging both the bottom and top tabs) and replace the vent grill mounting screws.

Note: DO NOT USE BULB LARGER THAN 30 WATTS.

You can find and order them easily by entering your full model number from the tag in or on the unit and also find helpful exploded view diagrams here.

Also, your owner's manual should cover that, and they usually have the GE part number inside. You can download them here.

Note that these are likely halogen bulbs, so do not handle them with bare skin. The oils on the skin will reduce their service life.

If after replacing the bulbs, they still won't work, won't shut off, or you have trouble with the fan or turntable, the filaments may have shorted, causing a surge which damaged your control circuit board.
