This indicates the door is not latching. The simplest fix is if it really isn't closed, and simply pressing on the door does the trick. Not so lucky? Latch mechanism itself may be dirty and not latching. Try cleaning it with standard spray kitchen cleaners and a good scrub, followed by a toweldry. Still no good? There's often an electronic interlock-- a place outside the latch, perhaps along the face of door, which must contact the body of the microwave oven. Again, try cleaning all possible contact areas. No? OK: microwaves are designed not to run without a tight seal to prevent emissions. perhaps the seal itself is damaged. Finally, and most unhappily, and expensively, the electronics module in the combo unit is shot. If the appliance is under warranty you're in like flynn; if it's relatively new but not under warranty, call the Whirlpool service 800 number and very politely but firmly remind them that this is really quite a new unit and certainly their products aren't meant to fail so soon... and surely they have a service bulletin because this can't have just happened to you... This will usually result in (oh happy day!) a free service call or (more common) a deal to sell the part at half price. Better than nothing!

I had the open and close door warning too. I used a can of compressed air to clean the connections, and suddenly everything worked just fine. I am guessing the latches were dirty and not connecting properly.

SOURCE: My Whirlpool microwave gold start

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type from us for $5 postpaid.

SOURCE: Whirlpool RMC275PD microwave won't start

I would first suggest unplugging the oven for a few minutes to give it a reset. On Whirlpool brand microwaves, you will hear a series of beeps when you hit START if one of the following is true: - the control panel is not programmed correctly - the door is not shut - there is a problem with the door latch system - there is a problem with the control panel If you do not have your owner's manual, you can download it here: http://www.whirlpool.com/custserv/literature_search_results.jsp?searchTerm=RMC275PD#literror It doesn't sound like the control panel is locked. When the control panel lock is activated, you will see "Loc" and a lock symbol in the display and only the clock, timer, and oven light will operate. If that does not solve the problem, then you have oneof the other problems as listed above. If you need further help, please reply / add a comment here.

SOURCE: whirlpool gold microwave Model GT4176SPS1.

Sounds like you just need to adjust the latch assy, usually two screws you can loosen behind console and push latch assy up as hi as you can and tighten screws, sw replacement is a good idea too. There are three screws in assy. Take vent grill off, two screws, and it exposes screw holding console, pop console up and latch assy is right there to left.

Keep in mind that the door latch probably broke or one of the keepers that hold it in place broke so now the button no longer releases the door. If you remove the upper grill and then the control panel (one screw on top then slide it up) you should be able to see what is happening. But if the latch is broken or out of position, then the interlock switches will not be closing, the microwave will not heat. Check in THIS LINK the possible part replacement: appliancepartspros.com/part_id=3776470

The door switch is another common problem. This switch is activated by the latch, and if it is broken the switch will not allow the oven to work.

Keep us updated.

SOURCE: The microwave display shows "Door" and it won't

I could have been more specific with a model number, but if this general answer doesn't do the trick, feel free to contact me with your full model and specific symptoms here.

It's usually a bad door switch or door switch mount. My helpful text file on door switches is here.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If it's one of those overdesigned Whirlpools, it can be one of many components. See the example photo at the bottom of this reply.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

My whirlpool microwave/oven combo is displaying a "DOOR" error message, and the microwave won't work. I have replaced a 20a bus fuse and all 3 door micro switches... It is still displaying the "DOOR"

When microwaves first got popular I used to be a helper with my next door neighbor who fixed them. I does sound like you should have covered it with those switches. If you close the door very slowly, pulling back on the door see if you can hear all 3 switches clicking. You should be able to hear them easily. If you only hear the first 2 try pushing on the door to hear the 3rd. If it will click with pressure on the corners or in the middle then you door is tweaked, possibly from pulling on the door hard to open it or smacking into something on the edge. If you can hear all 3 switches and it still wont start then its going to be the sensor that receives the signal from the switches. I'm not sure how accessible those are on today's models since they make them as disposables now, back then they cost around $500 so they were serviced.

Microwave won't start: Model rmc275pd

If you're saying that the inside light won't come on when you opoen the door, then you probably have a bad door switch, most likely the upper one. The most common causes are opening the door while it's cooking instead of hitting the STOP pad first, broken switch mounts, and damage to or slamming the door. These switches are locally available at appliance parts companies. I have a helpful text file with critical safety information and info on diagnosing and replacing door switches. You can find it by doing a search on Yahoo.com (not Google) for microwave doorsw.txt I appreciate your rating of this answer.
