There is a "recall" going on with HP for this particular problem. My Presario V6310 is one affected and is being returned to HP for repair at no cost. Go to HP.com.

If it is three days old and no wifi you may not want to read this...;-]
There is a off on switch for the wifi either in front or along the side of the case. By default it is off. The wifi will show installed and working but won;t do anything. The hard part is finding that stupid switch. Followed by pretending you knew it was the problem all along. I'm chuckling at this as everyone myself included has done this. If it is anything other than the switch on a 3 day old laptop I'd put in in the box and return it.
The wireless ON/OFF switch is tipically located at the front end of the computer, otherwise it will be a key combination such as the Key Fn + the F's key on top, depending on the manufacture.
May sure that the wireless card is installed in you laptop computer otherwise, it will not work even if the WIFI sign is on. You can check this by removing the cover located somewhere on the back below the battery.
Sounds like he does not have the wifi switch on. There are 2 buttons below the mouse pad on the front. The 2nd clear button when pushed in should turn orange letting you know the wifi 802g is active and searching as it blinks. When the orange light is solid it has locked onto a network. Hope this helps Acer sucks with this wifi funtion light.
Assuming your wifi inside your home is setup correct and other can connect to it ok.
You will want to make sure that you can see other wifi signals. A good test is to head to your local Starbucks and see if you can pick up their in-store wifi. If so, I would assume that your wifi inside your home is messed up and may require configuration by your local "tech guy."
Along the top of the keyboard, there should be some touch sensitive buttons. If your wifi light (looks like a small image of an antennae) is orange, then you will need to press that button and turn your wifi on.
What OS are you running and have you verified correct driver installation?
