This here is the main page for all support questions regarding your Dell 8300. This is a great starting point for all problems.
Specific information on how to replace a CD-ROM drive can be found here.
Two things are important: All plugs are shaped so they fit in only one way (they are either shaped or have a little notch.) So never force a plug into a socket, especially the power connectors.
Second - to make your life easier, set the jumpers on the CD drive to cable select if you are using one cable to connect the hard drive and the CD-ROM. This prevents you from messing with the master/slave settings.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

My laptop won't boot from cd

to reset the BIOS, there is a small battery somewhere in your computer. if you unplug it for 3 seconds, it will reset the BIOS. I RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT TRY THIS! get a service professional. If this doesn't work you might need to get a new laptop.

I have a dell diminison 2000. The cd-rom will open ,but doesn't recognize a cd. IT say there isn't a cd-rom drive. It just disappeared? Is it possible that the eye reader went bad? It doesn't show up when...

If you feel comfortable opening the case, check the ribbon cable connection and make sure it is solid at the motherboard and the CD-ROM drive. First, make sure the pc is off, unplugged and you are touching metal at all times during the process. Power back on and see if that does it. If not, could be drive failure or virus problem.

Hoew to install CD Drive

Hi,
You want to install a CD Drive. Ok you are Following these steps....
  1. Unplug the power cable from your power supply and open your Computer case.
  2. Determine which drive bay you are going to install a CD-ROM into. You should pick on of the uppermost drive bays
  3. Before you install a CD-ROM, make sure you have the proper jumper settings. You are only installing a single CD-ROM, set the jumpers as MASTER. The jumper settings are different for each CD-ROM drive, so consult your owner's manual so you know which pins to cover up.
  4. Once you have the jumpers set, install your CD-ROM in the computer's case. How you secure the CD-ROM in one of the uppermost drive bays depends on your case. Some CD-ROM drives have to be screwed into the drive bay.
  5. Connect the power to the back of the CD-ROM drive, then connect the ribbon cable to the back of the CD-ROM drive. Your ribbon cable has three connectors, one in the middle and one on each end. The middle connector is a SLAVE connector that is used if you would install an additional CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  6. Connect one of the end connectors to the CD-ROM drive, and connect the other end connector to the appropriate spot on your motherboard. Note, hard drives and CD-ROM drives have the same style of connector on the motherboard. You want to connect your CD-ROM drive to the motherboard slot that isn't red or is the highest numbered of all the IDE slots.
  7. Power on your computer after you plug it in. Your computer should recognize the new CD-ROM. If it doesn't, go into your motherboards BIOS and search around for the IDE channels, they need to be set to automatically.

My computer does not show my D:/drive, so it does not work

I would assume that your D drive is your CD Rom Drive. If you go into My Computer and the drive isn't there, Lets assume first that there is a problem with the Drive. If you have power to it and the drive does open to let you insert a disk, then our next step is to see if your data cable running to the drive is connected. Make sure that all power cables are unplugged before you open up the computer. Once opened look at the back of the CD Rom drive to check that the power plug is connected. Its the first set of 4 wires closest to you. The next cable next to that is the CD Rom Data IDE Cable. This cable must be plugged in all the way. Most of the IDE Cables will have a red stripe on one side. Make sure this red stripe is closest to the power cable for the drive. This will insure that you have this plugged in correctly. If you follow the IDE cable from the CD Rom to the mainboard (Motherboard) , you can make sure that this end is also seated firmly to the board. If all this is as it should be, go ahead and plug all your cables back in and restart your computer.

If this still doesnt solve your problem you might want to check your bios and insure that the CD Rom is recognized. It will show up in there if it sees it. If any of these solutions dont solve your problem, I would be leaning toward a bad CD Rom Drive.

CD/DVD ROM disappears

I would think either your IDE cable is faulty or the IDE connector on the motherboard, try swapping cables or use a double IDE cable on IDE 1 connector. You may have a faulty drive ide connection input in which case a new DVD Rom is the answer, only cheap nowadays.
