I have used this brand to watch over my place while I'm at work and yes you can view over a network through a Lorex App. I know its over a VPN through Lorex website. Excellent choice here :)
There should be a paper clip size hole somewhere on the back of the unit. If you depress the button in there it should be the reset. The problems sounds to me more of a hard drive issue though.

I was able to fix it by opening it up and using a little Gorilla Glue on the plug. The glue held the mini-USB plug in place and the connections worked. There are two screws that need to be removed near the bottom of the back cover. Then work the cover off and expose the board to glue the plug back in.
