I have a hp compaq presario desktop. push the power button no power. it is one year old. no light or fan. what steps do i take to figure out what is wrong

nothing happens, I will take that as no text shows on the screen
at boot (power button on ) time as it did for

CQ61 is not the full model number making accurate answers x10 harder. for any helper, who knows HP gear.
forget that huge battery, no laptop needs it to run on AC power.
most batteries this old are bad. same with the RCT/CMOS coin cell in side. page 55 shows how to replace IT.

does the fan inside blow air and heard ? if not the AC pack is bad.

so that is the black screen of deathh(sic) I call it.
so if the power pack is still good, we do the flash light test.
ever heard of CCFL back lamps, they ended in 2010
(see why my wanting real model numbers matter?)
if it has ccfl lamps they all fail about NOW.

push power button, for 10 to 30 seconds this is the HP
magic RESET, (its harmless)
AC PACK back in place. and to wall power hot.(means live power)
NEXT , if the fan works.!
if the fan does not work (say so please) and we can work that FIRST.!!! (in truth fan is first, it must blow )

They ended these junky CCFL in 2010, phase out.
a key year to not buy PCs older that that Laptops.

the psu is bad.
the test is easy , one jumper wire prove PSU bad.
if its fan is dead, (and all fans )

jump pins 16 to 17 (power on pin jumped to ground 17)
connector pulled, turns it on.

If you have a desktop computer but listing it as a laptop with a problem you will get the wrong information back to repair the unit so you need to take this out and resubmit it as the proper unit before anyone can give you the correct information!

a 17 year old Laptop , 99.9% now in the dumpster.
are you going to spend cash on this? if yes why?
if it was a horse it be in the glue factory.
a dead laptop
step 1: is remove that old shorted huge battery now.,
step 2: then that 17 year old useless as a brick RTC coin cell.
replace it now. or BIOS will be DEAD.
strep 3 , a working power pack 19vdc,65watts up. and does the PC fan work now?, if not, it needs lots more cash !!!!
ask if you can get this far.?
above can be done for $10 (8buck pack and 2 buck coin)
leave that main battery out , until the PC runs like new.
do not buy a battery main, do not. unless cash dont matter.

if this far, and the power button fails, then we must strip the PC down, to find out who is shorting the power buses !
or fan is bad, or just packed fully in lint , as all are that old.

here are the goals
1: power seems to work (the switch)
2: the fan works, and actually blow air, not packed up
3: screen shows text of any kind, like, "hit F10 to enter HP setup"
as seen for 17 years but not todaY?
4:BIOS key works. F10 key works as prompted . and BIOS screens all work.
5: more, get this far say so... lots more its not a toaster

my gawd, how old is that, over 10y i bet.
yours listed on HP.com not supported.
a dead HDD means (its bad) or you lost 12vdc to it
that means your PSU is dead. 5vdc is ok but that is not enough.
as more are this old. common.

learn to use a voltmeter
see that HDD connector
on pin is 5vdc
other is 12vdc, if 12v is 0v, the motor can not SPIN EVER.

just u will remove the Cmos battery from your computers mother board and take it.
go to shop and ask like this battery i need.

then buy and replace it..

Have you have bad weather?
Do you have a suppresser on the AC input
How old might this unit be?

No lights and fans ? then how du u can say that power supply is ok. Is the fan inside the SMPS spinning ? if yes, remove the cpu cab. remove 24 pin power supply cables and 4 pin 12 v supply from the motherboard and re attached them. and try.

there is problem with u'r SMPS. repare it or change a new one

i worked for hp and compaq it is well known issue to reslove this issue

1#turn off the computer and uplug the power cable from the computer and then hold the power button for 20 second then turn on the computer and the momment you back to desktop screen
