Laptop USB ports not working

I have an older laptop computer. Recently my USB ports quit working. The computer will not recognize my external hard drive, ipod and flash drive. They will acknowledge my mouse and camera but nothing else. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

SOURCE: USB Port

go to my computer>properties>hardware tab>device manager and go down the list to universal serial bus controllers, click on the '+' sign and see if any on the list have a red cross or yellow exclamation mark next to them, if there is '!' then right click and click update driver, if a 'X' then right click and select enable. If still not working, right click anduninstall all the controllers and then restart notebook and the controllers will be re installed and hopefully should solve the problem, if not then there may be a usb port fault on the motherboard

SOURCE: usb device not recognize

You mentioned that you uninstalled the unknown device from the Device manager. If you uninstall it then connected your usb flash drive you will see an error again on your device manager. This means that the driver for your usb port is not properly installed.

To install it, visit dell website, look for the model of your machine and locate the driver, download it then install from your machine.

SOURCE: USB device not recognized

This solution worked for me when I got the USB device not recognized message:

It can be quite frustrating. I've heard that older computers are more likely to have the USB device not recognized message.

SOURCE: HP Pavilion zv6000:

After reading the description, I think you need to try updating BIOS and latest device drivers for USB. Because USB are getting power on that means there would not be any fault to from the motherboard.

So please try updating latest BIOS for your notebook.
If you can provide me the product no for your notebook and the operating system which you are using currently then I can find the one for you.

Otherwise you can also do the same.

Type in the product no. on www.hp.com. Then go to software and driver download page, select the proper OS and search in BIOS ROM pack available for your notebook.

I hope this will help.

My usb ports on my laptop only recognizes my phone and mp3 player and not my external hdd, it tells me to format the plug and play external hdd. It does not do this in all my usb ports though

Maybe the external hard drive is to large to be recognized by your computer. Some computers won't recognize real large external drives.

Another problem could be that your external hard drive does not support Windows 7.

I recently purchased a new Cavalry external hard drive (500gb, CAUG25500), and had been using it on my Thinkpad laptop with XP. It was working fine, no problems. Before a trip I was going on, I wanted to...

1. This could be due to several things.
a. The power supply for the external drive is not working properly
b. A broken power supply connector.
c. The USB drive was disconnected improperly > that is not disconnected safely in Windows
d. The external drive controller in the USB case is defective. A new case is needed.

Vista stops recognizing external hard drive

This doesn't sound like an OS issue. This appears to be more an issue of the connection to the hard drive. The USB cable likely isn't the culprit, nor the laptop USB inputs. If the drive was ever dropped or the cable gets removed and reattached often to the actual enclosure, you might be looking at a bad port on the enclosure. This isnt a lost cause. You can always buy a hard drive enclosure from newegg and move the drive from the IOMEGA to the new enclosure. You can get a new enclosure for $15. Just because the USB port is bad, it doesnt mean the data is gone and the hard drive cant be used.
