The way these radios are designed, as with nearly all 2-way radios, only Channel Numbers are displayed. This is to save space on the LCD display for the other icons to fit in.
Happened to me too. It takes some disassembling!!!! Between the screen and the underlying circuit board is a rubber strip with conductive material throughout which provides ''ground' for the display. This rubber wears out over time, but the quick fix is to turn it a quarter after cleaning and treating the contact surface with 'contact spray'( sparsely!!).
TH-79A Kenwood HT and with the power off, hold down the MR button and the PTT switch, and while holding both of these turn on the power. The HT will come up in the remote control mode with the display indication "RC" on one band and the normal display on the other band.
.
To get the HT out of the "RC" mode just repeat the MR+PTT+Poweron sequence
There are several reasons for this, but one can be the flex that joins the display with the circuitry, carefully check if this is not broken or in this process or dirt.
