Some time with dust or Humidity there is a contact issue with the switch and the circuit so you need to get some contact spray spray it and should start working well.

IF the unit has sliding or twisting controls that use thin film deposit rheostats, you need to use spray cleaner to get all the dust out.

Here's a link to a forum where someone else encountered the same error. Seems it was due to running out of disc space in that instance.
