I have just bought an Epson 4490 flatbed scanner and want an owner user manual as this is a new machine and there was no real instructions on how to operate the Epson 4490

Of course that is what it will do. The same as ti will do as a negative. Neither can be printed out other than as a picture.

did you properly close the scanner lid? these type of errors do usually occur when you unproperly close the lid wherein light passes inside causing it to reflect on the document that you are trying to scan

try to uninstall and reinstall your printer software

There are two lamps with this model. One in the base for reflective and one in the lid for negatives and slides. If the base one is going out then it will be trying to use the one in the lid. You must remove the white document mat from underneath the lid to expose this lamp so it can scan your negatives.

you can scan any document in very easy way by the MS PAINT.

just type MSPAINT in RUN command then go to FILE menu then FROM SCANNER OR CAMERA

I'm running Windows XP and have had similar problems - where the install process informs of a problem (at beginning of install) and to "Restart and try again".

Eventually resolved issue by selecting "Custom" install, then ticking all the selection boxes as had been automatically done in "Recommended" install - then continue with the install.

All sections of software now installed correctly.

So you've completely ininstalled. Now you should download and install nCleaner, and do a Clean System, and then a Clean Registry. Now:
Download and install the latest 4490 driver software from here:
