When loading a CD or DVD disk, I can see the disk rock back & forth a bit, there is a "swishing" sound which I think is the optics trying to focus, then it starts "ticking" for awhile, which I guess is the lens assembly searching track-to-track for data... but it won't spin-up & finally complains there is "no disk". Sometimes it quits in the middle of playing a DVD.
The troubleshooting guide mentions a "wrong disk" but not a "no disk" symptom. That suggests the problem is more than a dirty lens or incompatible format. There are several videos on the web that tackle the "no disk" problem but all are of other brands than the Protron. You already know that it is not a matter of the motor. That actually suggests to me that the optics are not working. You might try a lens cleaning disk on the off chance that the lens is merely dirty or blocked but it does look like a failure lens apparatus. If so, you can probably guess that a service repair is probably not an economic choice. However, the customer service number is above.

It sounds as if there is either still some obstruction within the CD tray mechanism or path, or else the CD drive itself has failed and should be replaced.
I would recommend replacing the CD drive, especially if it has already caused one CD to break into fragments.
Replacing a CD drive should be reasonably easy if you have a tower computer and are happy to open the case.
Depending on the design, there are normally only 2 screws on each side of an optical drive and 2 cables on the rear to disconnect (3 cables if you have a direct sound connection from the drive to the motherboard).
Some case may have a quick release method for removing the optical drive. You should consider replacing the CD drive with a combination CD R/W DVD drive unless you already have a second DVD drive installed.
HI.This will occur when the optical assembly becomes unstable. this ((Whole One Piece)), assembly incorporates the spin/load motor, optics housing /arm, tracking device and tracking rail. This is connected to the loading dock assembly. This 'NO Disc' or CD NOT PLAYABLE, code is the result of a failed or burned out lens. It is possible that you have a dirty lens cap. you can try using a cleaning disk in this case to confirm actual lens failure. if the cleaning doesn't restore normal reading capabilities, this will confirm my diagnosis.
You will need to have the optical assembly replaced in this case. once replaced, your unit will be able to read and track once more.

When the CD does not read any disk, that is usually because of a problem with the
optical laser lens that is dirty, faulty or opaque, and will start
operating on certain disks better than others.
In that case you will hear disk spinning, whirring and clicking, but
the TOC (table of content track at start of CD will not be read,
therefore the error.
When this problem is beginning you may be able to read only CD, DVD or
Blue ray, or for example only DVD-R and not +R , or only to read and
not to write and so on. After more prolonged usage , often the unit
goes losing the rest of functions, and ends up not reading anything at
all.
If instead there is no noise, and disk does not spin at all , then
there is a faulty motor, or the motor micro-switch is bad. This
situation is far less common than the lens problem.
Try first using a CD lens cleaner disk to clean the lens. If that does
not work you will need to disassemble the drive , and clean lens
directly with cotton tips and isopropyl alcohol, or to replace the CD drive unit.

you must do a optical head cleaning on the unit, could be the optical lens was dirty thats why it can't read any disc inserted.
you Lens cleaner for CD & CD-ROM player With Voice instruction (English), Music and Automatic stop Scientifically designed, easy to use and keeps your player's sound at optimum condition
When the disc is loaded, the optics attempt to first determine whether or not there is actually a disc there. If that fails, the disk won't spin. The typical causes for this are:
1) The lens is dirty so that the optics don't realize that a disc is present.
2) The optics are bad and do not attempt the above.
Try cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. That should resolve the problem. If not, try playing a music CD. If the CD plays but a DVD does not, the optics are failing and need to be replaced. If neither one will play, the optics have failed completely and need to be replaced.
By this time I figure most peoples warranties are expired. So give this a try:
1 Open the case. 2 Turn the unit on and load a disk. 3 On top of the disk transport, you will see a black disk trying to spin as it reads the disk. You might notice that it is a bit quite as the display goes to 00H00M00S. It should be fast and a bit noisy. 4 Try loading a disk again, except this time, try to help that little black disk spin. It might take a couple of attempts, but I was able to get my 2910 working again.
The last year I've had to do this 2-3 times. But it works. From what little I have read, it may just be an issue with lubricating the right part with the right oil. I've narrowed my choices to PTFE 3n1 oil, Lithium oil, or silicone oil.
you will have to buy a new laser motor you can buy them on the net and they are easy enough to fit this is a commen problem most people throw the ps2 away as they think it cant be repaired but they can they r reasonably priced but a lot cheaper then buying another ps2 you should be able to fit it yourself it is easy enough a computer repairman out of the local papers will do it for you if you dont think you can do it i have seen them for sale on ebay maybe you try their first easy to do 30 min job hope this helps you out
