A bright white line across the middle of the screen indicates vertical sweep output failure. Check and repalce dmaged component/s in the vertical output section circuit. Check for any loose solder terminals around the the vertical output section circuit. Visit the site named 'Electro-help' for more details. Click this link. View it in "Timeslide" or "Flipcard" option, which can be selected from the drop down box menu by the [Sidebar] tag, at the top left corner of the display window. It will make search easy. Line across screen if i hite it it will work for a some time

If the line of which you speak is a horizontal line that looks like the picture collapsed, the problem is a vertical circuit problem. If hitting the set "fixes" it, then it is likely to be a bad solder connection. If you can solder, resolder the pins on the vertical IC. This is a small flat IC with about 11pins attached to a heat sink that may me marked LA7837 or something similar.

Let me know if that fails to resolve the problem.

The TV turns on and you can hear the sound but the picture is dark except for a thin line of blue dots in the center of the screen.

You have whats known in the biz as a cold solder connection on the vertical output IC or on the associated components. Not a job for the handi-man unless you know the issues with safty, and precautions to take with Hi voltage inside of tv sets. Shouldnrt cost much for the local shop to find your problem . Now on rare occations the poor connections are inside the IC and the IC has to be replaced. Good Luck
