The TV turns on and you can hear the sound but the picture is dark except for a thin line of blue dots in the center of the screen.
Part of the time the TV works fine, and other times it does not. When you turn the TV on in some cases it turns on and you can watch it for 45 minutes to an hour and then the picture starts to flip back and forth between a normal picture to just a dark screen with only a thin blue line of dots in the center of the screen. If you tap the side of the TV the screeen may come back only to fade out in another ten minutes or so. If you turn the TV off and then turn it back on once it is warm, you only get the dark screen with the thin blue lines. The TV is only 5 years old. Any idea what this might be and what parts would be needed to fix it?

You have whats known in the biz as a cold solder connection on the vertical output IC or on the associated components. Not a job for the handi-man unless you know the issues with safty, and precautions to take with Hi voltage inside of tv sets. Shouldnrt cost much for the local shop to find your problem . Now on rare occations the poor connections are inside the IC and the IC has to be replaced. Good Luck

I had the same problem and I found that it was 2 caps on the power
supply board. I had both caps replaced and it worked perfect. While it
is apart see if any other caps are bad( if they are puffed up in the
center they are bad).
a bright thin line in centre is called horizontal line.
first of all do not keep tv on unless it is rectified.
If you want to put on tv keep brightness minimum to protect your screen for any demage.
your problem is in vertical section.
1 check vertical supply.
2 check parts in vertical section or loose contact.
3 yoke connrctor loose
4 ic defective
It is not serious problem can be rectified easily
