you can easily buy a new HDD at buy.com or newegg.com but checking the old one and installing the new one are a little harder. The drive is simply a small SATA drive and can be plugged into any newer PC. Techs use a USB adapter, but if you know something about it, installing a drive isn't that hard. You may need to enable in in BIOS though.
Installing a new one is a simple matter, but then you have to install windows, which means you'll have to boot from the CD [and HAVE a windows install CD].
Good luck either way.

Take a can of air and blow it on the laser then try to see if it will read both cd's and dvd's. If it doesn't read one or the other then the dvd-rw would need to be replaced.
it means that your dvd lens is already damage. change your dvd player.

I'm guessing you may have locked the DVD region. If you right-click on the device in Device Manager and click the Region tab, does it say 0 changes available? Acer won't fix this, and claim you have to replace the drive. Can't find a firmware flash for this drive online, will post back here if successful!

Try connecting it to a different usb port. plugging out without first stopping the usb device must have the device settings on that port.
