I own a Canon Power Shot A610. I cannot download my pictures into my new HP laptop after downloading the Installation disc. Is that because my computer operates with Microsoft VISTA, unlike my previous pc?? I purchased this camera in May 2006. Respond to my home laptop [email protected]. No. The A610 works with MMC and SD cards, 2GB or smaller. It will not work with higher-capacity SDHC cards.

Are the downloaded pictures also black when viewed on your computer? If so, a stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

If your camera is not relatively new and you're running Vista or Windows 7, your computer may have problems seeing it. Unfortunately, this can't be corrected because Canon did not yet update drivers for your camera. But there exists a good, if not better alternative way to download your photos. Please don't take the following as a sales pitch as it's not, but please see this blog article, as it describes the use of an inexpensive USB card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:

Should just be a common USB mini cable, most cameras have this interface and Vista will automatically see the camera wiht its generic drivers. I use Picasa to download all my photos from 6 different cameras to my desktop and my laptop.
