You will need to find which distro you have and then continue from there. Most are fairly simple and if you get stuck either of the communities on the websites are extremely helpful.

Detecting but unable to perform any action..

if you have a linux distribution at all (eg Ubuntu, Fedora) or download a linux distro and use a live version (which is smaller than full version and can be ran off a usb so switch your machine to boot to usb once distro is on there) then you should be able to see the hard drive on a linux distro all fine with all files still on there. Also another option is get a virtual box program and open linux from that and access your files in that virtual distro

I tried run live ubuntu distro on my laptop compaq nx9030 but it freezes, one of the last message is 'out of memory', pc has 256mb and installed xp home run clean, other recent distro also freezes, only...

Well, Linux used to pride itself for being able to run on almost any machine. Ubuntu has become bloated over the years, but more user friendly. You may want to try an older distro like Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Long Term Support): http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ You will want the PC (Intel x86) desktop CD version ubuntu-8.04.4-desktop-i386.iso

Or Xubuntu: http://www.xubuntu.org/getubuntu

Or Lubuntu: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=lubuntu

Looks like your computer will support up to 2G of memory. PC 2700 DDR (SODIMM) Get a free scan form Crucial to see what memory use can use: http://www.crucial.com/

Post back to this thread if you need help installing the memory, it's easy to do.

I would recommend booting from USB. Go to pendrivelinux.com and pick a distro. The utility is awesome and makes it easy to boot from usb. make sure that bootusb is an option in BIOS.
Good luck

Linux inside the windows

Very simple. Get DSL embedded (about 50 MB) from:
http:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall/archive/dsl-4.4.9-embedded.zip

Unzip to a new folder adn then double click the dsl-base.bat file and you can run Damn Small Linux within windows. You can also copy it on to a flash / pen drive and run from it.

Activiton problem

Linux XP has had several reports of problems with activation. Your best bet would be to contact their technical support. Or switch to one of the completely FREE Linux distros. Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint linux, Dream Linux, Mandriva, Knoppix. Are just a few that offer the same simple install interface and hardware support.

Linux XP is a free linux distro that charges you for pre-installing applications like "Wine" that run windows based apps. Wine itself is also free and can be installed on any linux distro.

Hope this helps you out.

My mom gave me her dell inspiron 1000. It's full of junk and her settings. Is there some fast, easy way to get rid of everything and start it as mine?

Well, you could reinstall the OS, apps, everything.
But that may not be an option.
You could go with an alternative OS, such as the growing popular Linux distro Ubuntu LInux. You can get it as getubuntu.com Its free and fast!

I want to install RHEL3.0 in SATA DeskStart HD using MSI SATA MB, but not detecting at OS installation time. HOW i can detect, Pls help me!!!!

You need to create a space for which to install Linux. That likely means resizing Windows. Partition Magic is a good Windows utility to accomplish this, although there is a Linux version called Gaprtedthat will do essentially the same thing. You download the Gparted live cd, burn to disk, and run it from your computer. You must go into "setup" and set your Bios to boot from CDROM before booting the Hard Drive. Once booted, follow the on screen instructions. Resize Windows, (but NOT before a thorough defrag of your Windows drive), and create a "blank space" for Linux. Afterward, boot your Linux distro, (RedHat 9 was a great distro, but a newer version of a Red Hat based distro would serve you better, sayCentOS or Fedora Core), and follow the online instructions. Good Luck!
