After connecting the usb cable from printer to the the laptop switch on the printer and then install the printer in the laptop by inserting the printer driver CD that came with the printer

You're right, I checked myself. Ironically, they have a driver for Windows 95 though. You could try this one. The worst thing that happen is that it doesn't work. Support is very limited for anything on Windows 98 anymore. It might be time for an upgrade. Quick link to the "95 driver is here if you want to try it.
on that page, make sure that you choose the "
HP Photosmart printer software/driver " under driver. it will bring you to the other page. and scroll down, go to STEP 3: Obtain software. Click the button DOWNLOAD ONLY and save it.
