Dell dimension 5150 won't start

Buzzing sound at start up and 2 green numbers light up number 3 and number 4

  • Anonymous May 12, 2009

I had the same problem with my Dell Dimension E510. It had the buzzing and the 3 and 4 lights stayed on and the monitor had an orange light and didnt come on. So I took out the memory cards , cleaned the contact strips with a pencil eraser, snapped them back in and walla, it works now. I dont know if the eraser helped but this is how I cleaned memory chips for controllers on large metal presses where I worked. Thanks for the info. This made it an easy fix. All I did was google the words buzzing, computer , dell , wont start . Richard

3 and 4 green lights indicate the memory or the slots are bad. Move the memory to different slots and or change the memory.

I had the same problem on my Dell. It is either a video card or motherboard failure. I would try a different video card fist. If that doesn't work you will need to call Dell for a replacement motherboard as Dell does not use industry standard boards in the 5150.

My dell c521 wont start i have green power light on and number 4 is light up green the fan is also running high

Pretty Much General basic troubleshooting.
  1. Disconnect all external connections except the power, see if error changes. If it does, connect items 1 at a time till issue is isolated
  2. Remove all Expansion cards, see if any change
  3. Disconnect all drives from MB and power supply, see if any chage.
At this point if nothing has changed, replace the motherboard.

Not sure what to give you. Looking for a operating system for a Dimension 5150. Not sure what numbers to give you Model # or bar code

there should be a COA (certificate of autheticity) sticker on your machine that says what operating system it runs, check the lower left on the side or back of the pc on most dells...should be a multicolor blue green sticker

Dell Dimension 5150 Boot Problems!

You can probably try two things here.

1) Go to the BIOS and reset the defaults.
2) Clear NVRAM from your Dell computer. Here is how you do it.

Dell dimension 5150 blinking amber lights

I have similar problem these days. After normal shutting down the PC, it can not be powered up again, the amber light blinks. A temp solution for my case is by doing these steps:

1. leave all monitor, network, keyboard and mouse etc. connected
2. disconnect the power, wait until green light and amber light dim.
3. pop up the CMOS battery, then put back in (better to check its remaining voltage, if not good, change a new one)
4. power amber light flash shorter and lighter
5. disconnect any USB connections like keyboard and mouse,
6. immediately connect keyboard and mouse back into USB ports
7. my pc powers up at this point, all green lights shining. Except it displays CMOS setup warnings, give me options to click either F1 or F2
8. I click F1, it goes into normal login XP

The only problem is I could not shutdown PC again, if I do, then I have to repeat 1-8. I have to use "Standby" instead, which I usually do.

Start up fault

I'm not an expert at this!!
I looked up Dell Tech Faults on another pc.
Disconnect power and press on button to discharge pc. Remove side panel. Remove all USB port cables including hubs. Remove memory from the CRIMMS. Reconnect memory. Reconnect usb's. Replace panel and power cord. You can always connect to Delle Tech Support - doesn't cost.

For some reason only known to anoraks or rocket scientists--- this works and pc is restored to former glory.

Hope this works for you too.
