It stops playing 1-2 minutes into a music with irregular screechy sound and jumping back and forth for a few seconds, then stops with an "error" message on the display. When I open and close the tray again and replay, exactly same error happens and it never fails. Can anybody tell if there's a simple repair for it at home or it needs a replacement?

CDR error means the trouble is in the laser eye,maybe the eye is faulty already or dirty. If the laser eye is dirty,then you need to clean it with a cotton buds.Open the unit then wipe the laser eye tenderly with the cotton buds or buy a DVD / CD cleaner kit.Just click this link;

you may need to replace the whole mechanism as i've had quite a few philips and marantz cd recorders with the same mechanism with exactly the same problem. when you press open/close it will display open or close with no sign of life from the player. this turned out to be a faulty laser unit and the PCB which is underneath the mechanism seems to go the same way which i found out later when i replaced the laser unit. the recorder worked for around 5 minutes then the laser started moving erratically but then would work again for 5 minutes after switching it off & on again. i cured the fault by replacing the PCB aswell. hope this helps?

laser failure on the recording side is very common on marantz and philips cd recorders.
they're well known for it.
so it's most definately the laser in your case.
hope this helps.

open it up and take the mechanism out, then you should see a servo PCB screwed to the underside of the mechanism.
unscrew this and where the connecting wires plug in from the main PCB, you should see 2 or 3 fuses which look a bit like capacitors and should be red in colour marked MPXXX eg. MP100?
replace these if you can find spares, if not bridge them with a bit of thin wire soldered in place and then it should switch on once reassembled.
the clicking sound you mention will be the main power supply capacitors running and this is normal.
