Hi bscruggs5, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
What are the voltages? What is the maximum, minimum? The connections will get hot under normal operation.

Normal for voltage to increase with RPM, normal for voltage to decrease as battery reaches fully charged. make sure connectors are clean and tight.

SOURCE: wire connector between stator & voltage reg/rectifier burnt

your voltage/reg. can be tested in a couple different ways check ground res. check res. then revs. bias on diodes you have ac in dc out it sounds like you may have a diode gone bad allowing ac curent to flow causing the wires to get hot

SOURCE: my battery is not charging when bike is running (gsxr 600 k6 )

When you put a voltmeter across the battery terminals, you should get >13.5V (typically) with the engine running.
If less than this then your charging system is faulty and your battery will not charge.
See this personally authored thread for a diagnostic guide on how to determine whether you have a problem with your stator or Rectifier/Regulator - inlcuding some cold resistance checks you can do on the R/R to determine if it is shorted.

It was written initially for Triumphs, but applies to ANY 3-phase motorcycle charging system.

SOURCE: Can a voltage regulator/rectifier if not working

YES!
Good link here:
http://www.flygenring.dk/yamaha/artikler/1100ChargingSystem.pdf

Symptoms:
Lights flickering at times and/or battery gets hot to the touch

Problem:
Reglator/Rectifier

When the regulator dies, it allows as much as 19 volts to appear across the battery. This is not good. It will cook the battery and the battery could even explode. Fuse can not stand up to this!

What causes a 1986 goldwing 1200 sei to idle fast then slow

Are you using premium gas? Lower octane, especially "oxygenated" which is a fancy name for selling you 10% less gas replacing it for cheap alcohol; burns hotter and can cause this.
It's a carb-fuel problem most likely.

Suzuki 1986 intruder red light on dash

Check the battery is charging correctly. the voltages at the battery should be engine off- about 12.4 volts DC . Engine running at about 1000 rpm the voltage should be about 14.4 volts DC. if these voltages are down, you have a regulator, rectifier or alternator problem.

Battery not charging

run an ohm test on the stator wires, make sure you get readings through all combinations of any 2 wires. if you don't get an ohms reading between 2 wires that means you have a broken stator winding and the stator needs to be replaced. hook up a volt meter to your battery and test battery voltage at rest (bike off), at idle (bike on and idling should be at least 12.5 - 13 volts), and steady around 3 - 4000 rpms (should be around 13-14.5 volts. if it exceeds 15 volts your regulator is bad and needs to be replaced. if all numbers are about what I said, have your battery tested. If your battery is over 1.5 years old it should be replaced anyway.
