Depends which model you have. The models vary between 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB. It should say the correct memory your mp3 player has on the box or packaging that came with your device.
The AZ-ES256 is a very basic MP3 player and has no option for expanding it's memory.
If you need more memory, your only option is to buy another player. There are a number of Mp3 players around, and some have a slot to put in a microSD card to give you more memory.
You could also look at a MP4 player. While you can play movies on them, you don't need to, they will still play music. Many have 16GB of memory.
When you connect your device to your system, you can see a new secondary storage device (F:), like C, D drives.
Now right click on the device and defragment it. One more option for you. Right click and go to properties There uncheck the allow indexing service .... Also check the Compress drive to save disk space.
These will help you to save some more audio/video files.
I read somewhere that a 4 GB Micro SD card is the largest you can put in the SanDisk Sansa E260 expansion slot. It's maximum capacity is 8 GB, with internal + external memory put together. This is from what I've read. Hope this helps.
I havent experianced anything like that but i would recomend you to Format the player IT WILL ERASE EVERYTHING THAT IS IN THE PLAYER. it will restore it to like factory new.
Formatting the memory will clear EVERYTHING!!
