Cleaning the interior of a Star popcorn popper (large one)

We have had our Star popcorn popper for several years and never cleaned the acrylic surround, the metal bottom or the kettle itself. Needless to say, the oil has hardened on and is difficult to remove. Do you have any suggestions on what sort of cleaner might work (and not fume us out of the house) in this case? Thank you for a resonse, Debbie Moore

SOURCE: Need new kettle for a Galaxy G14 popcorn machine?

Hello. If you want a new kettle you can contact here:
http://www.star-mfg.com/Scripts/ContactTechServ.aspx

If it just needs cleaning, there are a few products that will dissolve the build up, remember, don't submerge the kettle in liquids. It will have to be done slowly, and take a little time, oh yeah, and effort :)
If you contact the manufacture, they can recommend a cleaner to use.
Hope that helps, and thank you.

SOURCE: need popcorn popper kettle for ccp-509 popper

adavis_NPG had the right number for Nostalgia Group. The price was $35.00 including shipping when I ordered it.
920-347-9122 is the correct number to call. I got disconnected the first try and had to call back so be patient if it happens to you. The person who answered was very helpful and very friendly.

Make sure your agitator arms are properly functioning. If the corn is not being properly stirred, it will not pop. Also, make sure you are using the correct type of popcorn oil.

Try new popcorn, popcorn dries out and does not pop well after being opened.

If the popcorn does not pop, and just turns black then it is too cold. If it pops very rapidly and then burns it is too hot. It is almost never too hot if you shut it off fast enough.

Model 5916052 popcorn popper

Star 59 is an 8oz popper, they stopped making them in 1992. Parts are becoming very expensive, usually better to dispose of the machine.
I have some used parts available, depending on which ones you want, or you could try partstown.com for Star parts.

Model 39A gets too hot too fast

That model has a thermostat (also called a high limit) that is set at 450F. it should produce a popping cycle of 3 mins, and yes will burn popcorn if you don't dump it fairly quickly.
The speed it heats cannot be too fast, there is only so many watts in the heat element. it may go to hot, but never to fast.
The best way to test temp is time the 2nd popping cycle with a stop watch. the second batch should be 3 mins +/- 30 seconds. if it is 4 mins it is too cold. a 2 min popping cycle is to hot.
A popper that is too cold is also popping poor quality popcorn, higher amount of unpopped kernels, and small chewy popcorn.
Measure carfully when doing time test popping. That model is 2oz oil, 6oz popcorn, and 1 tsp salt. Start timing when you put ingredients in, and stop when you dump it. The kettle must be hot, that is why you time the 2nd batch.

Is there a thermostat with this popcorn popper that prevents the popcorn from burning? Earlier models had one.

Yes, there is a thermostat inside that prevents the popper from overheating. I know because one is sitting on the desk in front of me. My popper pooped last night and popped only a quarter of the kernels, after several years of faithful service. So I took it apart today. Everything else checks out so I'm thinking the thermostat failed and isn't letting the popper get hot enough to work properly. Now I'm looking for a replacement thermostat.

Broken plastic window

I have found the plastic window online at the Back to Basic Company web site.

I ordered two. They were $2.00 each plus shipping.
I navigated to the parts area, to the popcorn. Here is the link. http://www.focuselectrics.com/catalog.cfm?dest=itempg&itemid=3678&secid=53&linkon=category&linkid=90
Hope this helps.
