If you are using hibernation mode it causes all kinds of problems, not working, corrupting window files so you are forced to do a fresh install. The reason is windows needs to be properly shut down, other wise it will become unstable to the point you won't be able to access files. I strongly reommend to disable this function or at the very least make a backup recovery disc.

SOURCE: I don't know what fn f4 or fn f8 do.

Hi,
Laptop keyboards can differ with the function keys and are set out different depending on make and model.
If you take a look at the F4 and F8 keys, is there any symbols (in blue) on them? If there is post back here with a description of the symbols, If there is no blue symbols on the keys then they will do nothing and there is nothing to worry about.

Regards.

Where is the scroll lock key on my keyboard

Hi Mark,

for scroll Lock on your laptop try the key combination hold the Fn key and press the F12 to activate scroll lock, the same can be used to undo the Scroll Lock too.

as you will see that you can also activate most other functions with the Fn Key combination when used with the keys which have the functions printed on them in the same color as the Fn Key
for example Fn+F3 keys will toggle WiFi on or off, Fn+F4 will put the computer to Sleep, Fn+Up Arrow to increase Volume and Fn+Down Arrow to Decrease Volume etc.

hope this helps

Function keys not working on hp probook 4440

Identifying the hot keys
A hot key is a combination of the fn key and either the esc key or one of the function keys.
To use a hot key:
Briefly press the fn key, and then briefly press the second key of the hot key combination.
Hot key combination Description
fn+esc Displays information about system hardware components and the system BIOS version number.
fn+f1 Initiates Sleep, which saves your information in system memory. The display and other system
components turn off and power is conserved.
To exit Sleep, briefly press the power button.
CAUTION: To reduce the risk of information loss, save your work before initiating Sleep.
fn+f2 Decreases the screen brightness level.
fn+f3 Increases the screen brightness level.
fn+f4 Switches the screen image among display devices connected to the system. For example, if a
monitor is connected to the computer, fn+f4 alternates the screen image from computer display to
monitor display to simultaneous display on both the computer and the monitor.
Most external monitors receive video information from the computer using the external VGA video
standard. The fn+f4 hot key can also alternate images among other devices that are receiving video
information from the computer.
fn+f5 Initiates the QuickLock security feature. QuickLock protects your information by displaying the
operating system Log On window. While the Log On window is displayed, the computer cannot be
accessed until a Windows user password or a Windows administrator password is entered.
NOTE: Before you can use QuickLock, you must set a Windows user password or a Windows
administrator password. For instructions, see Help and Support. To access Help and support, from
the Start screen, type help, and then select Help and Support.
fn+f6 Displays charge information for all installed batteries. The display indicates which batteries are
charging and reports the amount of charge remaining in each battery.
fn+f7 Mutes or restores speaker sound.
fn+f8 Decreases speaker volume.
fn+f9 Increases speaker volume.
fn+f10 Plays the previous track of an audio CD or the previous section of a DVD or a BD.
32 Chapter 4 Pointing devices and keyboardHot key combination Description
fn+f11 Plays, pauses, or resumes an audio CD, a DVD, or a BD.
fn+f12 Plays the next track of an audio CD or the next section of a DVD or a BD.

I can't get my IBM ThinkPd out of sleep mode. (I'm using another computer right now.) I tried taking the battery out and unplugging it for 20 minutes, pressing power button, holding power button down,...

It sounds like a failed motherboard, If it was stuck in sleep mode the computer would still turn on.

try leaving the battery removed plug in the laptop and see if it turns on, if not it sounds like a bad component on the motherboard.

How do i find hotkeys on acer aspire 5515 laptop

The Hotkeys are;

To go on anyway;

2) Fn + F2 = launches Acer eSettings Management in Acer Empowering Technology.

3) Fn + F3 = Launches Acer ePower Management in Acer Empowering Technology.

4) Fn + F4 = Puts the computer in Sleep Mode

5) Fn + F5 = Toggle the laptop from it's monitor to an external monitor, or use both.

6) Fn + F6 = Screen Blank > Turns the Display Backlight off to save power. Press any key to return.

7) Fn + F7 = Touchpad toggle > Turns the internal Touchpad on and off.

8) Fn + F8 = Speaker toggle> Turns the speakers on and off

9) Fn + Right Hand Triangle > Brightens the LCD screen

10) Fn + Left Hand Triangle > Decreases the LCD screen brightness

Acer Aspire 5515 Service Manual ( Free)

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-acer

Go down to the second Aspire heading.
The one that starts with Aspire 1200.
Drop down to line 6, then go across to the right, and click on 5515.

This is a PDF file. The computer you are on now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
I would suggest upgrading to Adobe Reader 9 (9.3.4.) though, if this isn't the version on the computer.

After you click you may not see anything happening for up to 30 seconds.
The file is downloading in the background.
Usually it takes a few seconds to see the first page, and additional time to fully download.
Suggest you let the file fully download before looking through it.

This is a SERVICE MANUAL, not a User Manual. Much more detailed, including disassembly procedures.
