Try rethreading with a new needle. Make sure presser foot in up position when you rethread. Thread needle with flat side in back and more rounded side facing you. Make sure you pull the thread taut as you insert the thread into all of the tension disks.
Clean out the shuttle and the feed dogs with gentle handling of your small sewing machine lint brush. Sometimes broken thread, lint, and threads from your fabric get caught in these areas and are not visibile until you get the brush bristles in there.
Make sure your top tension is on a medium number and that your pattern setting matches the stitch you wish to perform. Also make sure your needle size matches the fabric weight. Another fix if it isn't anything I have mentioned so far, there is a foot pressure regulator on the left-hand side of your machine which controls the pressure of your presser foot. Turn it (some push up and down) just a tad in either direction and recheck with a scrap of fabric to see the results.
Hope this helps!

SOURCE: sudden knotting under fabric

I have an Elna 2005 machine and had a similar but opposite problem whereby the tension up top was too tight - thread wouldn't pull smoothly. I found adjusting the feed dog lever slightly helped the stitches a lot, even though the needle tension up top is no better. Hope that helps! :-s

SOURCE: Bobbin continues to pose problem - knotting thread underside of fabric,

In 99% of all problems with "bird's nesting" or "knotting" it is an issue of the thread coming out of the take up lever (at threading guide #3) (from the spool; through the first thread guide at #1 down to #2 and up to # 3) when the thread comes out of the take up lever, the machine can not regulate the thread and it floods the machien with thread and wraps itself around the bobbin case. OR! Your tension is too loose. Raise it. Your machine should preform perfect at tension #4 unless you are using speciality threads or fabrics.

ALWAYS be in the habit of threading your machine with presser foot up so that while threading between paths 1 and 2 you are certain to have the thread pass throught the tension disks.

This will happen on a $50.00 machine or a $5,000 machine. The thread needs to be regulated.

USE GOOD THREAD!

Thanks,

Bonnie

SOURCE: bobbin problem

When you thread your bobbin and put it in the case the thread should be on the left side of that little arm on the bobbin case. It allows the thread to slide off that arm.

Another issue could be your lower tension. You may need to loosen or tighten it.

I had the same issue and the above two things eliminated the problem.

My fabric is puckering. I have an activa 230. I know it is a tension problem. I can't find my manual so I can't figure out how to fix it. Thank so!

How to Achieve Ideal Sewing Machine Thread Tension Threads

Understanding Thread Tension Threads

Here's the manual:

Interestingly, I just went through all sorts of gyrations today because the fabric was pulling up like it was being gathered. Turns out after I'd tried nearly everything, the thread had slipped down the thread spool and wrapped around the spool pin. Problem fixed...

Keeps knotting up in the bobben won't see what is the tention setting for this machine

If there are wads of knots on the underside of the fabric, most likely it's because the top thread is not completely seated in the tension disk (called bird nesting).

Remove the top thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Verify the thread path is correct.
Test your machine.

The factory standard tension is placing the top tension at the midway point. However, this will change as each machine is different and will change with use.

To achieve the best tension, the top & bobbin threads should meet in the middle of the fabric.

How do u end the stiching

You shorten the stitch length and either reverse a few (5 or 6) stitches or stitch forward a few stitches. Some people will stitch in place but that frequently causes a knot on the underside of the fabric. You can also tie the thread tails together (especially when sewing fine fabric like chiffon, silk, etc.) and clip the tails close to the knot.

Sews 1/4" and then sews in place

1) remove upper and bottom threads. Try sew without threads.
Is fabric transported corectly?

NO:
- Drop feed dog button is OFF
- Dust under stitch plate
- Transporter malfunction (must be taken for a service to the BERNINA dealer)

YES:
- Upper or bottom thread jammed
- The upper thread tension is too tight.
- Wrong needle used (probably small ...)

My stitch does not sew on right side of fabric. I sew & see the underside of the stitch. I remove the fabric & the stitch is on the underside.... Never known sewing machine to do this. Help!!

Hi. first thing is to remove the threads from the machine, top thread and the bobbin, and replace to manufactures instructions. If still the same the problem sounds as if there is no tension on the bobbin [under] thread, adjust to a light tension. Then adjust top thread tension until the knot is in the middle of the cloth. Most times people keep tightening the top tension..

The bottom thread on my Bernina 140 jams

Try pulling more thread out before you begin the seam - about 6". If you can hold the threads while you take the first few stitches that helps too.

5932 knotting every other inch

Try oiling the hook if you haven't recently.
Check you needle plate and hook for damage, they may need to be buffed or sanded smooth.
Check your upper tension discs for lint and double check your upper thread path (proper threading).
There are other things like hook timing, needle clearance or broken check spring that may be wrong but you need a technician for those things.
best of luck!
