Sometimes when I plug the charging lead into my laptop the power button light flashes till I take the plug out and reinsert it. It will not charge when the light is flashing. Any idea why this happens ?
I am having a similar issue.
When I plug it in and run on AC, it works fine (battery charging, running on AC) for about 20 minutes, at which point it STOPS charging off the AC and gives me the blinking power light. Now it is running only on battery. The battery will drain and the laptop will die. The only way to get it to charge is to wait for it to have been off for a while, then UNPLUG AND REPLUG the jack into the computer. Then it will charge fine. It will charge indefinitely until you turn it on. Then you have 15-20 minutes again until it stops charging.
Even weirder, if you remove the battery during all of this, it STILL gives the blinking power light but will run of AC. So the power jack is CLEARLY working. Also the battery holds a charge decently when it does charge. Instead, it seems to be some issue with the computer and power and the battery together.
The DC jack in the laptop is showing early signs of intermittent issues, the jack is solded to the motherboard which sometimes breaks free over time, this is something that will eventually need to be addressed.

Since is shows it as charging then your power cable should be working. So it looks like a battery issue but batteries just don't die unless a cell inside dies then they will stop working. Try taking the battery off and making sure that the connections are clean then put it back in. If that doesn't work give the battery a good full charge then bring the battery and laptop back to where you bought it and get them to test the battery to see if a cell died.

you got a bad battery. If your old battery works fine, and the new one wont hold a charge, Take it back to the store and get another.

All rechargeable batteries have a limited life, and as they age their charge capacity reduces over time and you get shorter and shorter time between charges.
Recharage batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and batteries over 2 years old are considered nearly worn out. Worn out batteries won't charge up at all.

Your motherboard is probably shorting out your A/C adapter, you may need a new motherboard. With a Dell, the A/C adapter light will be green when plugged into the wall but as soon as you plug it into the PC the green light goes off. Which means that the Motherboard is shorting out the A/C adapter...
hope this helps
