Pc is not recognising external hard drive, clicking noise can be heard from inside the unit?

when your external drive does not appear in "my computer" or not recognized in windows vista or windows 7, then just right click on my computer, click on manage, the go to disk management. Find your external drive there and right click on it, then select assign new drive letter. Select a letter from the midlle of the alphabet like m, then enter. The icon of your external drive should appear inside my computer

Hi. If you here some clicking noise then your external hard drive might be busted already.

Try to contact a local tech and see if he can still pull out your data from there.

that is a common noise when your HD just failed it can be internal or external drive most of them work the same way, there is 2 metal readers that hover on top of the actual disks to read the information. Those readers get stuck (beeping noise) or keep going back and forward trying to read (that is the clicking noise) a way to try to fix the problem (it works sometimes) is replacing the circuit board attached to the hard drive (inside the metal enclosure) and you have to find one with the same characteristics as the one you have now. sometimes when we really need to recover the information we try that and it may, may not work

When a hard drive makes a clicking noise, it is faulty. The clicking noise is the heads swinging back and forth. This hard drive is dead and the data is lost. If you desperately need to recover your data, there are companies that can recover and copy your data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

audible clicking sound? doesnt sound good. clicking sounds are usually signs of failing HDD....

it happens when the hard is gone bad or can`t be recognised.you can try uninstalling the drive from device manager.you can check the hard drive case or can try the hard drive on some other computer.

sounds like you are using the wrong power supply. Check the amp output on the power plug you plug into the wall make sure its the same as the amp input of your external harddrive

That clicking/knocking or squeal is the read/write heads touching the platters inside the hard drive. They should hover over them. Play TAPS!!!! Once those heads crash into the platters inside....its gone! Some companies charge big money ($100+/HR) to remove data from crashed hard drives. Take it outside and smash it with a sledge hammer.....at least no one will be able to get your data. Here is a company that does this type of work....good explanation here

I would suggest the external casing of the harddisk that contains its power supply is busted, so you need to change the casing or remive the harddisk from the casing and connect in inside

The clicking sound you hear is unfortunately the death rattle of a hard drive. The sound is a regular click, click, click. This is because the heads of the drive can no longer find or read the sync track on the drive and usually means all the data on the drive is unrecoverable by external means. Hard drive labs can recover data from these disk failures but it requires them to dismantle the drive and that is usually a very expensive upwards of several hunderd dollars depending upon the amount of data recovered. You can purchase a replacement drive for the case and install it yourself if youare brave enough, for less than the cost of the complete package if you are good with a screwdriver.
