Dark screen I have an S3000 - X11 which a friend gave me recently saying it had a screen problem. I clean installed XP Pro SP3 and increased RAM to 512MB. It works fine for a few moments after boot up and then the screen suddenly goes dark. The desktop image is still there, but very dim and dark and, therefore, unusable. This applies whether it is on battery or mains power. Moving the screen back and forth causes NO flickering or change in image. I have investigated getting inside the machine to check the display signal and power cables, but after can't work out the hidden fixings! Any advice would be gratefully received! SOURCE: erratic display

Since the computer works fine with another monitor, now try the defective monitor on another computer.

Problem persists, you got a failing electronic part inside or the monitor cable.

SOURCE: Screen is dark or dead on my 17" Macbook Pro

This could be a backlight issue, a board issue or an inverter issue. Look at the screen closely, if there is a faint image it's either a backlight issue or inverter issue. To weed out between the two you can just order on inverter, they're 20 bucks on ebay, if that doesn't work, replace the backlight. Backlight repairs are somewhat difficult. As much as I would like to be able to tell you a quickfix that will solve backlight the problem, you'll most likely have to google for guides that show you exactly how to replace the backlight or bring it in for repairs.I work for Mac Repair NYC and i have to fix this problem a lot.

Cannot install business plan pro version 11.0

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) The latest version of Business Plan Pro 11.0 will install and run in Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3).
If you're installing the software from a CD, you may not have the latest version and could encounter a message during the installation that indicates you need Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed. Downloading the latest installer from our website will resolve that problem.
Resolution
Take the following steps to download the latest installer and use it to install our software:
  1. Click the link below to go to the Software Download page of our website:
    http://www.paloalto.com/download_software
  2. Enter your Business Plan Pro 11.0 serial number and the email address you use for registrations, then click Go
  3. Accept the License Agreement and click the "Continue to Downloads" button.
  4. Once you reach the downloads page, you should be prompted to either Open or Save the installer file. Choose to Save this file to the Desktop of the computer.
  5. Once the download completes, choose to Open or Run the file to install the latest version of the software on your computer.

Dimension 5100 and windows xp pro SP3 clean install

Well if you have it installed on the computer and cant get past the Windows logo. Put the SP3 disk in and do a repair. Make sure you hit -R and not the repair button after clicking continue. Well the directions for a repair will be on the screen. That is my thoughts on what you should do. If you have already done this, then I'm not sure where you should head to next. Hope this helps!!

I have a microtek scanner model #4900 which I gave to a good friend who has the new windows 7 operating system how do I get the driver files to enable it to work on her machine?

On the Microtek web site, I only see an XP driver. Your friend could try installing a generic TWAIN compliant scanner that is included in the Windows 7 OS or try to install the XP driver using the XP SP3 compatability mode (right click on the file, choose Properties and then the Compatability tab). Those drivers are at http://support.microtek.com/downloads/drv_specific.phtml?slct_os=8&prod=14&bymdlnme=1 .

A different method is available on Win7 Pro or Ultimate. Download and install the XP mode to create a virtual computer running Windows XP. Install the scanner to this "second" computer. Your friend will probably need to save the files to external media to transfer them between the two "computers".

I hope this helps.

My computer only boots successfully after a forced shutdown.

Is it possible that you have installed winxp twice? You say that you installed XP Pro sp3 was that an upgrade from xp home? if so then you will need to uninstall one or both versions of XP then install only one.. Make sure you backup any important files first though

Windows explorer not initiated at startup and hangs the system,

I had this XP problem with Norton recent after SP3 got on.
Clean install and no antivirus, straight afterwards a bootable CD with SP3 then I replace already removed Norton with Avast virus scanner.
Superfast, all problems I ever had gone. Likely the scanner.
