WD3200JS Hard Drive - Hard Drive Problem Detected

Computer will not boot and says 'a problem has been detected with the hard disc'. How can I troubleshoot this, is there a program that can scan it with that will tell me if it's done or fixable? I have retreived all the data from the disc and performed a format clean, however at the very end of the format it says unable to comple as it cannot save a certain file. Not sure where to go from here so would very much appreciate a little advice. Thanks in advance.

thanks, I remove the hard drive first and attached it to my laptop.....it saw the drive and displayed all the files no problem. I'll take a stab at removing the other drives and let you know tomorrow how that goes, many thanks so far as i guess this is sort of a good sign that the hard drive is okay....right?

when you say unplug everything, do you also mean the hard drive?

    Helo there
yes this is a good thing if it sees the drive now just need to make sure that the drive loads when you start the computer if not then it means something is missing is the startup side of the drive let me know tommorrow ok thre is a lot of things we can do here we may even be able to recover it back to factory state which is very common if you want this normally will solve any problem
But it needs to be done a certain way or it can be fatal for the operating system ok

i wouldnt remove the drive right now if it is showing up that is a good thing

Okay so, I put the hard drive back in and disconnected the CD drive, unplugged everything from the mother board and reseated it....then turned the computer on.
I got the same message ''A problem with the hard disc has been detected, hit any key to continue' when I hit any key I get 'NTLDR is missing, press CNTRL ALT DEL to restart'.
If it is a help I have an enclosure that I used to remove all the valuable data before it was lost, so getting into the hard drive itself is possible if need be.
Yesterday before I posted on here I got the computer to go into what I assume is Bios (a screen where you have to use the arrow keys to change hardware settings) sorry I'm technically minded but not computer literate.

Hello there again how are u doing hopefully good
ok well i see that you were saying that you are getting a ntdlr error is that right if so this is telling you that there is no operating system to load from or tht the drive is being seen but the parameters of the drive are not set correctly meaning this when you are in bios and are looking at the drive you will want to ensure that the drive may be set to user if that is a option and some drives need the specific parameters meaning the capacity on the drive and the drive type like lba and the cylinder amount and the heads this is all found on the drive itself so please ensure that those are set correctly
But remeber that if you have removed the operating system then you will need to reinstall a previous version if it askes you meaning if you have win xp for example u can use a win xp reboot disk or a win 98 disk to verrify the validation process during set up ok but normally if you have win 7 then you should be ok
Please keep me posted on this
This would be due to you trying to format the computers hard drive

Okay so i have it in Bios and here are my menu options; MAIN, ADVANCED, SECURITY, POWER, BOOT, EXIT. I can see the hard drive in SATA port 1 and its showing 320.0 GB. Let me know what I need to look for setting wise and I'll go through each one and change if necessary, and thank you so much for your patience so far.

I forgot to add, this is a Vista system and i have the system disc but it will not go to the disc and shows the NTLDR message again. I wonder if i inadvertently changed something the other day in bios and didnt realize it.

Hello there again hey no problem i am here for you and hopefully you will find hat you need in bios also remember that if you see the drive go ahead and click on it and see what it tells you about it ok you may learn a thing or two about it that may help ok
Also in your bios boot menue make sure that you see the same drive there as well and make sure to highlight it and click on it and see what it says about it menaing like first drive or something to that effect then make sure to press the f10 key to make sure it saves the setting that you have selected then restart the computer you may still have the same thing show up but at least now you are headed in the right direction
Further more i should have asked you before you used the disk did you try to use the special fkey when starting it up to see if the computer can allow you to bypass the tart up files and reinstall the operating system using the operating system that is on the recover partition on the drive normally this key may be one of the following combinations
Try tapping the Del key. Also try F11, if neither of those work, then try these combos below:

    Fn+F2
    Fn+F8
    Fn+F10
    Fn+F11
    Fn+F12
    Shift+F2
    Shift+F8
    Shift+F10
    Shift+F11
    Shift+F12

Remember to hit these key combos before Vista loads, only when you sure the keys were pressed, cross it off the list on move on. When you do determine the correct key combo, please post back here,

Okay wow, this is turning into quite the encounter! so, I can get into Bios by tapping the Del button, I have no idea what everything is supposed to be set on once I'm in, once I exit Bios the operating system disc thats in the drive starts up and i get the 'Windows is loading files' then the screen goes black and thats where it stays. What area of Bios do i need to focus on first, lets start there. This message telling me the hard drive has a problem is irritating. You can bale on me with this any time you want, I had a feeling this was going to be a bad fix to try.

  • Michael Thomas
    Michael Thomas Dec 17, 2011

Hello there again no i wont bail on you i know it is difficult but it can be done it just takes a lot of troubleshooting i m sorry for that but if any thing else you will learn a lot about bios and your system
any way always start in the main section first then go thru the list and if somethng is disabled highlight it and look to the right and it should give a description of what it does and what it could do id it is left disabled or enabled then go to the next one and do the same ok

Hello there and welcome to fixya
well it sounds like you have a couple of options here
First what i would do is to open the case on the computer then unplug everything from the mother board like the cd rom and any associated burners and the A drive if there is one
Now start up the computer and see if you can get it to go into bios
once in bios several things may happen you may get a error code about the drive or it may even say no drive found if so then you will have to go back into bios and change the way the computer boots to see if it will recognize the drive if it is now seeing it make sure it is set to the drive then pres the f10 key to save it then exit and restart now if the computer comes up and it is now running go ahead and plug in every thing then restart the computer and it should now be ok if not your drive may have to be removed and tried into a different computer and see if it can be recognized if it cant be recognized in a different computer then the drive is either bad or one of the jumpers may not be set right or may be loose this is very common on these drives ok
SO please try these simple things first then let me know how this works PLEASE LET ME KNOW
There is still a lot more we can to but i need you to try these things first ok
Best regards mike

My hp desktop says internal hard disk not found how do i reset my drive

First reset the CMOS. Check your motherboard specs for how to do this or remove the small round silver battery from the motherboard; wait 30 seconds and reinstall it. (It is a good idea to replace with a new battery.) This will reset the CMOS. Then reboot to see if HDD is detected. If not, go into the BIOS setup (repeatedly hit F10 at HP logo screen) and check to see if your hard drive is listed. You may have to set it to "on". If it is listed in BIOS, but not detected another drive (a bad one) could prevent it from being detected. If you have any removable or external drives attached to your computer, disconnect them. Reboot your computer to see if your HDD is detected. If not, open your case and disconnect the data cable from all drives except your primary hard drive. This includes the floppy, optical, zip, backup, or secondary hard drive(s). If your HDD is detected, reconnect each drives data cable one at a time rebooting between each. If after reconnecting a drive and rebooting, your HDD is not detected the last drive is a bad drive and preventing your HDD detection. I have found that sometimes a bad drive that is connected will let the HDD be detected then on later boots the HDD will not be detected. Also it is possible that your BIOS is corrupted. Let's hope not. Another possibility is a bad motherboard. I hope this helps you.

Dell m65 hard drive not detected

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

When I turned on my computer it went to a black screen then said "Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 083) Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation v2.0.1.9(12/15/09) Check cable...

You get this message when the hard drive (1) is not detected at start up (its dead), or (2) hard drive is detected at start up but there's nothing on it to boot from. Since it's a Toshiba, you can likely hit the Esc key when the Toshiba Logo shows up, it'll prompt you to enter Setup with F1 (or F2), and then you can see if there's anything under Fixed Disk or Hard Disk Drive - see if it's detected. My suspicion is that the hard drive is likely bad, and on Toshiba's, the hard drives are usually pretty inexpensive and easy to replace - physically. You'll need to have an optical drive and a Windows CD/DVD to load Windows onto the new drive. Let me know if further help is needed.

When start up my Emachine E525 the laptop the screen is blank, then after a while if any key is pressed a bleeping sound is made the some system language appears on the screen saying: 'For Atheros...

It seemed that the laptop is booting to the network to correct this
1. Go to the BIOS Check if the hard drive is detected by the computer (Hard drives are usually shown as alpha numeric) 2. If the hard drive is detected make sure that the hard drive is the first boot device 3. Save all changes and restart the computer 4. If the hard drive is still not detected you have to take out the hard drive and put it back in (reseat the hard drive) 5. Go to the BIOS again check if the hard drive is detected if not replace the hard drive

Hope this helps

Acer 3100 keeps saying media test failure chjeck cable

The BIOS, the control program built into the motherboard, is set to try booting from devices in a certain order when the power comes on. Most computers are set to try the optical drive first, possibly a USB device next, then the hard drive, and finally to try booting over a network connection. The error message you're seeing is because it's tried the network boot without success, and is telling you that maybe you have a bad connection.

What this all means is that the hard drive isn't being detected, or something has happened to your WIndows installation. It may be that the hard drive has worked loose from its connector, or has developed a hardware failure. There may be some problem on the motherboard. Or you may have picked up a virus or other malware that has done something nasty to Windows.

The hard drive is under a cover on the bottom of the computer so you can check that it's properly seated. You can also enter the BIOS setup screen when you turn the computer on and check that the hard drive is being properly detected. If you have access to a Windows installation disc, you can use the diagnostic tools it provides to check the hard drive. If you don't feel you can do it yourself, there's probably a computer service shop in your area that for some fee can check the computer for you and tell you what needs to be done .

Hope you can get the problem straightened out quickly. Thanks for using Fixya!

When i put it on, it gives the message operating system not found,

Try this. Turn on the computer. While booting, enter the bios setup and check if your hard drive is detected by the motherboard. If not, turn off the computer and refresh the connections of the cable from hard drive to Motherboard (both ends) and power plug on the hard drive. Then turn on the computer again and check if the hard drive is detected. If detected, check the boot device priority. The OS hard drive should be on the first boot. Save your settings (press f10) and enter. Hope this helps.

I accidently dropped my external and now it is not being recognized by my computer. How can I retrieve all my files?

At Least it should be detecteted by your Machine, if it is not being detected then Game Over.
If it is detected, then we can proceed, you just want to download the Hiren's Boot Disk. Here or Here.
Burn it on a CD or Make your USB Pen Drive Bootable and Copy Disk in it.
There are tons of Data Recovery Application it it, I'v used them many times, they are Efficiet Indeed.

Boot failure Asus P5Q-EM

Disk boot failure. Issue:Disk boot failure.
Cause: This issue could be caused by any of the below possibilities.
  1. Boot options are not set properly in CMOS
  2. Non bootable disc or USB in computer
  3. Remove added hardware /check connections
  4. Hard disk drive is bad
Solution:Boot options are not set properly in CMOS
Verify that the boot options within CMOS are set properly. Below is an example of how we recommend the boot options be set. Additional information about how to enter CMOS can be found on document CH00192.
  1. Floppy drive
  2. CD-ROM drive
  3. Hard Drive
  4. Other / Network
Non-bootable floppy diskette or disc or USB in computer
Verify that there is no floppy diskette or disc in the computer. If the boot options are set improperly the computer could be trying to boot from the disc drive instead of the hard drive.
In addition to verifying there is no disc in the computer make sure that no USB jump drive, external hard disk drive, or memory stick is inside any memory card reader.
If you're wanting to boot from a floppy diskette, CD, DVD, or USB drive and are getting this error message and have verified that your CMOS settings are in the proper order as explained in the above paragraph the diskette or disc you're using is either bad or does not have the proper files on it to make it bootable.
  • Additional information about how to make a boot disk can be found on our boot disk help page.
  • See document CH000669 for information about creating a bootable disc.
Remove added hardware / check connections
If you've recently installed any new hardware it's suggested that it be removed to verify it's not causing this issue. If after the device has been removed the computer works and it was another IDE / EIDE device ensure that the jumpers are properly set on the hard disk drive.
In addition to removing any new hardware it's also suggested if you've recently moved the computer or installed anything inside the computer that the connections for the drive be checked. Usually it's best to simply disconnect the cables from the back of the drive and reconnect them to make sure they're connected properly. While inside also disconnect and reconnect the cable connected to the motherboard as well. While inside your computer make sure you're aware of ESD.
Bad hard disk drive
If you have followed the above steps and you continue to experience the same issue, unfortunately it is likely that the hard disk drive is bad or the controller is bad.
If available, you may want to connect another known good hard disk drive to the computer to determine if it can be detected. If it is able to be detected then replace your hard disk drive. If it is not detected, unfortunately you will need to replace the motherboard or controller as it is bad.
If no additional hard disk drive is available it is recommended that the hard disk drive be replaced first or that the computer be serviced / repaired.
