Microwave seems to work fine with the exception of an intermittent problem with the keypad.
The "2 "minute button and the "vent fan" button don't work most of the time. It's never one or the other, it's always both. If one works they both do, when one doesn't, neither do.
You don't post the exact model number (usually on a sticker on the interior left hand wall) so I'll have to be a bit general. Sometimes, and I stress sometimes, the end of the ribbon the plugs the key panel into the smart board can be cleaned with a soft pencil eraser to fix the problem. More than likely, you will have to replace the key panel. For older models, the part may no longer be available. I'd look it up for you if you post the exact model number. (it should be something like JVM64-001 or JVM1430BB3)
The exploded view does not show things very well, but first you have to take the top vent cover off. It's the top three inches of the microwave that goes all the way across. I think on this model there are two phillips head screws from the top down at the very front edge of the microwaves top. You will probably have to shift the vent cover an inch or so to the side to then remove it. This should get you access to the one phillips head screw at the top of the control panel. Then lift the panel up about a half inch and it will come forward. The key panel is only available as the "control panel assembly" (
WB07X10629) which in stainless is rather expensive, but is available.
Any GE authorized servicer should be able to order it for you, or you can order it Direct from GE,(I think you can get to parts ordering by calling the GE answer center @ 800-626-2000) but don't expect any deals direct from GE parts dept. They usually charge a high retail and shipping, so it might be even cheaper to get it through an authorized servicer. Other parts stores would not normally stock an item like this and would have to place an order through GE anyway.
Control is still not reading key panel input. New key panel with same problem indicates fault is with control. (very rare with these symptoms - 99.99% of the time I'd bet on the key panel, or that the ribbon connector is not plugged in fully) I'd take the key panel ribbon back off and try spraying the control side where it plugs in with some electrical contact cleaner.
Glad to hear you finally got it going. I wonder if the Ebay item was brand new? The important thing is you got your unit going again. That's great. I would appreciate it if you would post a "FixYa" rating for this. Thanks.
Sure you can look for a smart board (
WB27X10604) which lists for about $250. I'm still leary of that E bay item.

How do I reset the settings? Is it as simple as unplugging the unit?

Thanks for your help. The model number is JVM1871SH02. Reseting the unti didn't help. There only seems to be one screw holding the SS frame onto the keypad. I removed it and still can't seem to bunge it. I could pull it off but then I'm sure it would just break. Any tips on getting to the keypad so I can clean those leads?
I did everything you suggested and put the keypad back. All I did was unplug everything that I saw plugged in in the back of the keypad, wiped the plug and put it back. Everything seems to be working now. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it!

Looks Like I spke too soon. The problem is back and now the "0) button won't work either. Guess I need to order that part.
any suggestions on the best place to order that keypad control panel?
Ok,. . . replaced the key panel and the "2" the "0" and the "vent fan" buttons still don't work? I'm at a loss, any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Jim F
MNTECH,
I want to thank-you again. Per your suggestion, I used a little elec contact cleaner on the plug for the ribbon cable and that seemd to do the trick I used the thin plastic tube from the sray can and did the best I coudl to soak all the contacts on the plug, which I'm guessing is where the problem was all along. I waited about 10 minutes (while trying the previously inoperative keys) before I posted this note and everything seems to be functioning well. If you know anyone who needs a key control panel I have an extra one, but I got it on Ebay for $80 bucks which included shipping. A lot cheaper than the $153 on the GE web site.
Your advice was right on the money and I really do appreciate all your help!
Thanks again,
Jim F.
The problem was sorted out methodically and accurately
Back to the same problem. The 2, 0 and vent fan buttons are inoperable again. Could it be the board that mounts to the key panel? I've switched out the old and new a few times now and nothing seems to work. Can the control panel be ordered in the same way the key pad was?
