That happened to me too once, in my case it turns that one of my speaker wires came loose from back of speaker and was touching the metal in my truck. after correcting the wires it still said protect, i then found the reset button located under faceplate and held it down for a few seconds and my receiver was back in business.

Try disconnecting your battery, reconnecting it, and resetting your stereo. If that doesn't work, the constant power (yellow wire) or ignition wire (red wire) may have come in contact with ground or isn't properly connected. Make sure everything is connected properly and try resetting your stereo. If it is still flashing "protect", the unit needs servicing Contact JVC Customer Care Center at: 800-252-5722.
