Question about JVC KD-PDR30 Car CD/ MP3 Player
Just bought a brand new JVC KD-HDR50 car radio, with HD FM/AM, CD and iPOD capability--for my 1999 VW Passat. The FM reception is great, but I get no AM reception whatsoever. Is this usually an antenna problem? radio problem? Could somehting have been installed incorrectly? I got it installed by bestbuy. How can this be resolved? Many thanks!
I was having the same problem with a jvc kd hdr 30. I Installed it myself over a year ago and never wanted to deal with the issue. Finally, I decided to take a look at it today.
On my head unit, all wires were connected except one blue one with a tag that says "do not connect to power, for remote device or power antenna only." This unit is in a '97' MBZ E320 with no visible antenna; I think it is part of the windshield. In any case, between the wiring diagram in the manual and the harness that is part of my car, I was left with 2 blue wires to choose from, one with a white stripe and one with a gray stripe. After testing both for power or ground, I determined neither had power with key on or off. Both had high resistance ground when compared to the chassis ground. In other words, I measured between chassis and these wires. First, I took a wire and connected it to the chassis ground and connected the other end to the blue wire coming from the unit while tuned to a local am station. This simply killed all reception am or fm but did not harm the unit. Next, I connected the blue wire with gray stripe of the car harness to the blue wire of the unit and again this killed all reception. Then I connected the blue wire with white stripe of car harness to the blue wire of unit and presto magic I had great am reception.
I am guessing that this blue wire with white stripe must be part of the antenna itself or perhaps is a connection that increases antenna power. Maybe 'power antenna' on tag refers to an actual powered antenna (like as in amplified?) and not as in an antenna that rises up out of fender, as I believed.
This may not help the first person with the question, but maybe it will help someone out there who searches for these kinds of answers like I do from time to time.

That is usually the antenna. Antenna's do go bad, as AM reception is all based off the vehicles ground system. It could be lose on the vehicle or just quite working correctly. Best Buy can trouble shoot it by using one of their antennas and grounding it to your car and pluging it into the radio, good reception? Then your antenna is bad - still no reception? The probably the radio.
Hope that resolves it.

My pioneer had the same problem after installing via the wiring harnesses into my BMW. Pulled it back out, there was a blue wire with white stripe out of the unit, and a blue one coming from the harness. Joined them up, BINGO. Perfect reception.

My problem was a little different the am went out after while I took the faceplate off of my JVC KD r300 and would replace it and get am reception for a while then it would clock out again face plate comes off on my model inserting handle of a nail clipper on the left side slot installing it requires that you put the right side in first where there are clip Grabbers and then click it shut but you'll have to align a few things on the inside.

These people are just shooting in the dark and hoping it solved the he problem. The actual solution is buying the right antenna adapter since your VW has an amplified antenna it needs a turn on lead from the new H. U. since the factory has been replaced that is no longer present. There are two antenna adapters one without a turn on lead for Mercedes and such and the VW specific. Buy the VW specific and problem solved.
