I'm going to be late to this party obviouisly but hopefully someone else will be able to benefit from my diligent research.
You need to have the usb device formated as FAT32 and the videos will only work if reformated using
WinX Free AVI to MPEG Converter
It is freeware but watch carefully to dodge any toolbars it may install.
http://www.any-video-converter.com/downl... Try this free "Any Video Converter" I used from the drop down list Video List DVD Video Pal/NTFC Movie conversion. Works great for this player. Hope that helps out.
You're a life saver. I was trying to use handbrake and I couldn't get the specs right. WinX output to AVI works pefect on these units.

I was able to use Handbrake 0.10.1 x86_64 on my Mac to convert MP4 videos to work on the Sylvania.
My settings:
Video:
Format: MP4
Video Codec: MPEG-2
FPS: Same as source
Variable Framerate: Checked
Constant Quality: 14 (but 1 looked the best, but larger file)
Audio:
Codec: MP3
Mixdown: Stereo
Samplerate: Auto
Bitrate: depends on the source, but i've played files with 80 and 160.
Subtitles: did not use
Chapters: did not touch, left as default
A codec works like a video compressor as well as a video interpreter. It takes the file and un-compresses it to what the player needs as well as how to generate the picture. Unfortunately there are literally hundreds of them. So normally you get a problem where a video was generated or saved using a different codec. The other part to this which is your problem is that you can use different codecs to create the same file and then you can change options on each of these. So you can find two seemingly identical videos and one will play while the other won't. On a computer you just load a codec software suite which installs hundreds of codecs. Unfortunately on a player like this you can;t load the, You are stuck with what it came with.
Having said or typed all that I ran across quite a few complaints about this player not being able to play mp4 or mpegs unless they are on a dvd disk. It will not read them from the usb. I would guess that the usb interface is not capable of the larger data rate a mp4 requires. So you may find if you burned the mp4 to a disk they would play but you won't be able to play them off of the usb.
I'd suggest either burning them to a dvd or trying a different file type like a AVI You can find most movies in avi format or you could use a commercial dvd versions which should play fine. So basically I don;t think you will get those movies or any mp4's to play off of the usb stick. You either need dvd versions or you will have to leave it behind. I'd try to find some dvds as that flight is a real killer as far as boredom goes. wish I a fix or work around for you but there isn't one.
Download K-Lite Codec Player. It will install all new codec to your computer. So, there will be not any problem with codec.
Download YouTube Playlist Using IDM

Usually answered in minutes!
Thank you for your clear explanation and earnest attempt to solve the problem!
So, instead, I'm just going to rely on my laptop. After all, it's one less thing to carry. Plus, it has replay, which will be quite helpful for shorter (animal) videos :} At least all of the time and sleuthing in finding the videos is not for naught; I can still play them on my laptop.
Again, I appreciate your direct answer. Now I am clear on my next step!
Sincerely,
Edith
I haven't been able to get mp4 or avi files to play, but just copying the vob files from the dvd disk (and renaming) or changing mp4, avi, mov files into mpg format has worked for me but only on a usb drive. Trying to play them from an SD card has resulted in grainy, hoarse sound. The advantage of using a usb drive is that you can put lots more content on than on a standard dvd and you can easily swap files in and out.
